    For an alternate manual source, Google "toyota tech info" and pretty much the first hit should be the Toyota techinfo site". There you'll see "manuals" tab, click that, and then enter your car info, language preference, and search. It has all the available pdf format manuals and downloadable.

    the 1st alert "maintenance required" comes somewhere between 250-300 miles prior, got it today when leaving work with like 9760 miles and service due at 10037 (dealer sticker, meaning it was serviced at 5037) ... time to schedule service for next week ... 1st oil change, here I come :):(o_O

    There are some horror stories here about dealer oil changes but your will likely go well.
    Quite a few people recommend to check the oil level. Sometimes they overfill.

    I asked for some clarification on how the first two "free" Toyota oil changes and tire rotation worked. Someone at the service desk of my local Toyota dealer explained it as follows:

    For oil changes, you have either 2 years OR 25k miles whichever comes FIRST. If you wanted, you could do both oil changes in the first 10k miles. They don't care when you do the oil changes as long as you are still within the first 2 years of your purchase date or 25k miles.

    For tire rotations, apparently you can come in every 5k miles but I forgot to ask what the maximum time or mileage is. I assume it is the same as for the oil changes (2 years or 25k miles). Not sure.

    Since I changed out my oil at 4k miles, I will probably hold off until I get up to about 12k miles or so. Then hopefully my second oil change will come at about 22-23k miles and just at the end of the second year.

    You can tell them thanks but no thanks. And as far as I know that doesn't void your warranty.

    Obviously that's not on, for a lot of owners. But if you're on the fence: the DIY cost of two oil changes is peanuts. And it's about the only way to ensure no damage to underpanels, overtorque of lug nuts, drain bolt, filter housing, and oil overfill.

    I agree! This is our third Prius and we have 11 years of Prius driving under our belt. (And a Toyota Tacoma too.) During those 11 years, we have lived in 6 states, so we've had the opportunity to see a lot of different Toyota Service departments.

    I've had the underpanel on our 2010 Prius damaged by a Toyota dealership. We've had oil leak in our garage on two separate occasions after an oil change at a Toyota dealership (on one of those occasions they never put a drain plug gasket in). I've caught them red-handed on one occasion not rotating the tires after they said they did (I mark them beforehand). And my oil has been over-filled 7 times. And keep in mind that I've seen these issues across 5 out of 6 states, so this is a systemic problem amongst Toyota's service departments.

    They say having a Toyota-trained technician working on your car gives you peace of mind, but it's the complete opposite for me. What gives me peace of mind now is doing routine maintenance myself. I change my own oil, rotate my own tires, and take care of coolant and transaxle drain-n-fills myself. It's far easier than most people think, it saves money, takes about the same amount of time as driving to the dealer and having them do it (give or take), and most importantly, you know things are being done right.

    I will take advantage of the free Toyota Care maintenance on my new Prime, but I will be checking their work closely. Luckily, the dealership where I'm at now has not done me wrong in the two years we've been here and they have performed flawlessly across the board both in sales and maintenance. One of the best ones I've ever seen...but I still do my own maintenance when I can.
