    Hi everyone,

I am dealing with a very strange and puzzling situation. My car is a 2005 Prius model. So, i had to replace the fusible link (burnt out) with another second hand one (visually checked it and it was ok, no melted wires). I also had to replace my 12V battery because the previous one was very old and failed (old one was 35Ah, 330, new one is 40Ah, 300). After connecting everything i powered on the car and i noticed the "check engine" and "VSC" lights came on. The car started, including the MFD, it was showing HV battery half full (it was half full last time i drove the car, which was a month ago). After 10-30 seconds the HV battery bars suddenly started to drop until i only had one (purple-coloured) left and the engine started revving faster and faster until i got the red triangle and it stopped. It did this every time i turned the car on (brake pedal + start button). The red triangle only comes on when the engine revs above a certain point. I did cycle the ignition on and off several times but every single time the engine would start revving after 10-30 seconds (after the 1st time as soon as i heard it revving i would turn the car off) + i get the "check engine" and "VSC" lights. After a few start cycles the HV battery on the MFD now appears as only one bar and car start revving immediately.

Headlights work, including high beam. Horn works. AC works (i heard the fan). MFD works. BUT: NONE of the interior lights work (including door lights). NO beeping of any kind when i start the engine, when doors are open, etc. No flashing car symbol when the car is off. Pressing the "door lock" button on the driver door will lock / unlock doors. Nothing happens when i press the "lock" / "unlock" buttons on the remote. (The battery remote is good). I visually inspected the little fuses under the hood and the ones under the dash and they look ok...

I never touched the orange HV fuse but took it out and checked it with a multimeter and it is ok..

I have NO idea what is going on... Someone, please help...

Ok, so i also found the 15A dome light was blown. I did replace it and now beeping, clock, remote lock/unlock and interior lights all work. "VCS" warning light disappeared.

However: "Check engine" warning light is still on, engine still revs more and more until it hits a point and then it stops and i get the red triangle and a bunch of warning lights before i shut it down right away. Exact same issue persists no matter how many times i start it over (but no red triangle when i start it). I also get "ready" and no other warning lights, just the revving and the HV battery charge that drops rapidly to 1 purple bar on the hybrid battery. The little car icon is green, by the way.

    Welcome to PriusChat !!

How many miles are on this vehicle?

Has the HV battery ever been serviced or changed?

Do you have a way or reading the fault code(s)?

I suspect your HV battery may be dying/is dead, but just to be sure, is your engine oil level Ok?

Car has 262,000 km. It was bought second hand from Germany. Before i bought it all servicing was done at a Toyota dealership (in Hambourg, Germany). I personally did not check the hybrid battery per se, but since i bought it it has been running great until a month ago when i parked it in my garage and then left for a month to travel abroad. (fuel consumption was between 4.0-4.2, by the way). All issues started after coming back and trying to start up the car. the 12V battery was almost completely discharged. I think it was the original battery, not sure, it was a Toyota branded one in any case. I have since replaced as i mentioned in my original post.

I can't read the codes (if there are any) and the closest Toyota dealership is quite far and is one of worst ones in the region. I live in the country... Worst case scenario, i will have to put it on a platform and send it to them... The weird past is that i get no other warning hybrid system warning lights...

But if the hybrid battery is dying/dead, shouldn't i get some sort of warnings besides just the "check engine" light?

I checked the engine oil, it's ok. Oil was replaced a couple of months ago.

Might be time to get an ELM OBD2 bluetooth reader for a couple of bucks (U$D 2-5), which usually includes delivery.

Without knowing the fault codes it is nearly impossible to offer proper help.

Given that the HV battery sat unused for a month (never a good thing), we can assume some issues there.

Do you know of a local mechanic (or friend) who might have a code reader handy?

So, there is a high probability that i will have to take the hybrid battery apart... Damn... I will ask around and see if someone has and can lend me code reader...

I placed an order for a mini OBDII reader with bluetooth... It's supposed to work on a PC too using scantool.net since i don't have an Android phone... Now, waiting is the worst part. :)

Right, there are a couple of warning lights that should come on when the battery is no longer functioning properly, and I should tell you that I myself have never experienced a dying HV battery, but with my 2007 I know that day is coming. I am basing my opinion on the age of your car (assuming the HV battery has never been replaced) and the rapid depletion of the battery after the car is started. If the battery has not actually failed yet, you may be able to prolong its life with a product sold by one of the members of this forum, but you should know that it will have to be replaced eventually.

Thanks for your reply. I would have posted a 50 sec video i just took with my iPhone of the whole engine shutting off situation, but don't know how to do that...

By the way, do you have a link to that product?
