We have installed 6.24KW DC/5.421KW AC Solar system. It can generate 30KWH. However our temperature has been in mid to high 90 this month. Wife wants to keep Central air on for our cat even when we are at work.

Housecats are descendants from African wildcats (Felis silvestris lybica), which is a desert species, and actually prefer warmer temperatures than humans. I think that their nominal "comfortable" ambient temperature is around 85°F (humans is about 76°F), and they don't feel really uncomfortable until around 126°F. So there really is no reason to keep the house as cool as you would like it for yourself, just for the cats. They would probably actually like for it to be warmer than you normally keep it.

I favor Mr. Charles' opinion vis a vis cats. Mine (Yewee), currently 12+ years old will ask to leave the comfort of my 74° home to loll about in the 95° garden for several hours to study the aviary delights of my yawd! She'll ask to come back in at the sight of miscreant canines, large trucks, or odd people!! When I leave the house for several hours, I set the A/C up to 79° or 80°, and she'll tuck away on her favorite chair!
It's a tough life, but somebody's got to do it!!

Our normal setting is 78-79 F. Front of the house we set at 82 F. When we leave the house we set @ 85-86 F. I can't afford to set @74 F. :)

Received my first electric bill since I purchased PRIME 18 days ago. Surprisingly, the bill is bit less than last month. The billing cycle was such that it includes only 13 days of PRIME ownership. During that 13 days, I did daily charging of fully depleted battery, so at least 6.4kWh/day of electricity had to be used. I checked my electric supplier's data, and the daily usage does not seem to have increased much after the PRIME purchase. It really is within normal daily fluctuation. With our pre-PRIME daily average use of ~30kWh of electricity, fully charging PRIME should increase the average about 20%. But I am not seeing that.o_O

I will check again after a full month of charging is accounted for next bill. The graph is showing daily use of my household electricity during July and Aug. The billing period for current bill is for 7/11-8/9 (represented by the horizontal black line in the graph). I purchased PRIM on 7/28 (indicated by a red arrow), so that means 13 days of total billing cycle had PRIME charging.

I'm using PG&E Toolkit on my iPad. It uses your historical PG&E data and compares different rate plans. Turns out after installing solar in my home in late February, that the EV-A plan is best for me even when using the air conditioning and charging my Prime during the day sometimes (I was on ETOU-A at the recommendation of my solar company rep).

I just got permission from our condominium to install electric charging station..in Finland the electric price is around 3 cents/kW..now I have been using public charging stations..they are quite expensive..12 cents/kW + 2,3 USD/hour for parking on the other hand since I am working in ICT it has been interesting experience to see how well the charging operators work..

Wow! Why so cheap? Is this for every household in the country?

    Welcome to PriusChat!

(100% renewable): Ironic, since (North Sea) oil has been a major part of Norway's economy for many years. But good to hear those options are available. In southern California, the major power company offers people two options for where their power comes from: (1) a mix (expensive) or (2) all renewable (more expensive). The default is the "mix", but even that has a large percentage from renewables (and as of 2016, only a very low 4% from coal). Mostly renewables and natural gas. But California is expensive for everything. Here, there are 3 tiers depending on how much power you use each month. For the first little bit it's 16c/kwh (I'm very careful, so thankfully I am always in this tier). Then when you use all of that allotment up, the biggest "middle" tier is 24c/kwh. And then for heavy users, there's a high tier for anything past that (I forget what it is, but it's something like 32c?) Most people use all of their 16c amount each month, and go into the 24c tier. I don't drive every day, so I don't have to charge my Prime everyday, and try to cut electricity usage when I can, so even with occasional charging, I'm still all in the 16c/kwh tier.

Note that electricity in other parts of the US can be much cheaper (I think the average nationally is 12c)...

Well Norway has oil, Denmark has wind and we in Finland have water power, bit of wind and very small portion of sun

Ah, sorry, my mistake! Having visited Finland and enjoyed it quite a bit, you'd have thought I wouldn't mix it up with Norway. That's what comes from lack of sleep! Yes, Denmark has lots of wind (including some nice off-shore wind farms). Here in California, we don't have any offshore wind farms yet, but besides a few isolated turbines here and there, we do have at least one large wind farm, in the Palm Springs area.

I'm surprised the price for electricity is so cheap in Finland (compared to California). Is the price subsidized by the government? Well, having a lower kwh price than us (and much higher petrol prices than us) certainly encourages the adoption of EV cars and usage!

I guess I'm in the "little' major power company of Southern California. LADWP, our rates are tiered also but change according to the season. I just checked and the July-Sept rates are .14788 for tier 1, .018816 for tier 2, and .25601 for tier 3. I've been thinking of switching to Time Of Use but there is a $10 service charge for it. Anyway, I haven't noticed a big hit for my Prime in my bill. There are other factors at work so it isn't an easy comparison from year to year.

As far as my bi-monthly bill, I was 80% into tier two last bill period. My total electric bill for two months was $340.

Hydroelectric power is typically the cheapest form of power generation; no surprise there. That said, I wish they would tear down that Hetch Hetchy/O'Shaughnessy dam and restore that valley, second only to Yosemite in its beauty, but I digress.

Hi no it is not subsidized - we have open electricity market and very high taxation in gasoline + cars
