Featured Honda Civic Diesel

    Honda announced today that Civics in Europe will now be available with an updated diesel engine. And it won’t be some teeny-tiny one that only makes a couple dozen horsepower. The new engine is a 1.6-liter turbodiesel that makes 118 hp and a healthy 221 lb-ft of torque. Still, it’s not quick. Hitting 62 mph takes a leisurely 10.4 seconds.

    But while the diesel Civic definitely won’t beat the Type R in a drag race, Honda does say it’s good for 76 mpg based on European testing standards. That’s quite impressive on its own, but Honda also promises those results will be easier to achieve in the real world thanks to a series of engine and exhaust system upgrades.

    Sadly, there’s no indication that Honda has any intention of offering its new diesel engine in U.S. Civics. It could always change its mind, but for now, the torquey 76-mpg Civic will have to stay forbidden fruit. . . .

    The news titles were teasing with "76 MPG" and I briefly thought Honda might be sharing their first generation, Insight technologies after a 10 year absence. But EU testing protocols have been optimistic compared to the USA EPA and this diesel won't be coming to the USA soon.

    Come now Bob, you should know this by now.... 76 imperial MPG.

    That translates to 63 US mpg.

    Still 63 MPG is nice too.

    Out test driving the latest coding on the BMW i3-REx. It worked perfectly adding 0.4 gal to the usable tank capacity, about 16 miles.

    What is confusing is an article on a European car has US MPG listed in the article instead of the standard Imperial MPG. No amount of arm twisting is going to get the rest of the world to use the US units of measure.

    Gerdes liked the Civic with the older diesel he once got to test.

    Honda diesels for the US were another victim of VW's cheating. After the first Accord hybrid was canceled, Honda planned a diesel version for here. Still being early on in emission controls, buyers considered adding DEF for SCR a negative. So Honda went with just the NOx trap; VW was supposedly making it work on the Jetta. They couldn't get the emissions, fuel economy, and performance to work in a balance needed to sell. So Honda canceled the diesel Accord before it shipped.

    We slowly phasing out imperial mpg. I haven't seen it advertised in at least 5 years. The only place you'll find imperial mpg is in the brochures or online specifications. L/100km is almost universally used now.

    We haven't switched to kW and Nm just yet. Still using hp and tq. Although with more EVs coming, it might make sense to use kW for power output.

    Pretty much everyone's using cubic centimetres for engine displacement, anyway.

    Missing person report descriptions are still mostly old school, pounds and feet. I guess the cops found people were staying lost when the descriptions were switched over to metric, lol.

    Probably because it's going off the driver's licence... which is still in ft/lbs. Don't be fooled with the kg/cm lol. It's converted from ft/lbs in the computer system.

    The US stalled its metric conversion years ago. It appears Canada cannot part with the imperial units either.

    It's your fault :p (Seriously, because there's so much trade with the US, there are things that just can't be changed because the US sells them in imperial units. Of course now if you go to Home Depot, you better damn make sure to check the specs of the screw you're replacing cause both imperial and metric screws are available).

    I was with a company, we were obliged to redo an entire previous imperial project (rather than just send the drawings to the shop again, because TWO bolts on the business end of the project were metric, and the client didn't want a mix of metric and imperial. This was a complex amusement park ride.

    I worked on some photocopiers that were originally designed in the Netherlands and then modified & manufactured in the US for the North American market. It has a mixture of metric & imperial sized hardware. It could be a challenge at times to work on.

    Even the symbols are now in two different versions. Canada has moved towards the international labelling while the US is still using the old labelling

    (e.g. BRAKE instead of ((!)) for the parking brake, CRUISE instead of the speedo with an arrow symbol)

    Even the wiper stalks are different now (moved over for Gen 3 so it's been several years now). We've moved away from "MIST OFF INT LO HI" to symbols.

    Some labeling is mandated to be in English words, but there's still a lot of symbols.

    Here's a list of what's mandated: 49 CFR 571.101 - Standard No. 101; Controls and displays. | US Law | LII / Legal Information Institute

    Basically, brake malfunction, ABS, brake proportioning, regenerative brake system, brake pressure, brake fluid, parking brake, brake wear, engine stop, and TPMS faults (not low tire pressure, that can be a symbol) are required to be in English, without a symbol. (Interestingly, a lot of cars actually break these requirements on some controls, but seem to be allowed through anyway.)
