Hi everybody. I am the proud new owner of a 2007 Prius with 57K miles with a new hybrid battery and 12V battery, and I'm having some problems.

    HISTORY

When I bought it about a week ago, there were no dash lights on (except the tire pressure light, which is still on and I tried to reset but didn't, so needs to be looked at) and everything was working great.

About a week and 500 miles later, all of a sudden many lights on the dash came on -- the red triangle with the exclamation mark, VSC, check engine, a car with an exclamation mark, and a car with an exclamation mark on the top left corner of the MDF, etc -- and the A/C stopped blowing cool air (still blew, just not cold).

My wife took the car to Pep Boys (I was away on a trip) and they changed out the fluids and reported the following engine codes: C1241, P0A93, and C1300. But then, the lights all went out again right after the fluid change, so my wife continued using the car.

Now, I'm back in town and all of a sudden, the lights have come back on, and I'm investigating to see what's going on and would appreciate any insight before I take it in to the dealer for repairs.

    MORE HISTORY

Based on the P0A93 code and some more digging (no waves in the reservoir), I think there's a problem with the inverter cooling pump and that it needs to be changed (it's still the original unit with the black base). I would appreciate any insight here: do you think this is worth doing at the dealer vs. any mechanic (it seems like a simple swap)? Should I do this first, before I take it to the dealer?

I checked the batteries (hybrid and 12V) and all is well there: voltages, connections, everything is fine. This is to be expected since they are both less than 6 months old.

Thankfully, the inverter also appears to still be working fine.

My main concern is that use of the car with a faulty inverter cooling pump may have damaged some electronics aside from the inverter (could this be the cause of the C1241 and C1300 error codes?).

When the lights all came on this last time, the A/C and cruise control suddenly stopped working and also like a black bar, dead zone, appeared across the top of the MFD, below the car with the exclamation mark (see picture). This dead zone/black bar disappears when you enter diagnostics mode and curiously is exactly the same height as the PROBLEM indicator that appears on the MFD when I first start the car. I entered diagnostics mode and the following codes appeared: 01-DC-190-30-2, 01-D5-190-67-F, 01-DB-190-98-F, 01-DB-110-E5-2 (see picture). What could be going on here?

I would greatly appreciate any insight you all may have before I take it in to the dealer.
Lastly, should I have it towed to the dealer or can I drive it there (15 minute drive)?

Thank you all very much in advance.

Unless you continued to drive your Prius for many hours with the P0A93, I doubt you did any damage to the inverter electronics. But if you or your wife did continue to, then you might have.

As to whether to tow or not to tow - it's summer, you're in Florida, a 15 minute drive.....that's a tough call. Chances are you'd make it without damaging anything but why risk it? Also, it depends on whether or not the Toyota dealership will replace the HV electric water pump for free under the extended coverage. If they cannot, you should DIY because although it's difficult to access, you can still manage it and save some $$$.

Curious if Pepboys also changed the transmission fluid, and what brand/type they used.

If you qualify for the 'inverter pump' recall (links below), take it to the dealer without clearing the DTC codes... otherwise you might try the job yourself and/or find someone who might work on a Prius for less. Not sure where in FL you are, but I am sure Todd ( @TampaPrius.com ) would take fine care of that vehicle.

You can run your VIN for recalls at the dealer, or online at : Toyota Owners Official Web Site

Those codes were thrown because of the inverter overheating, and should go away once fixed/reset. But if still in doubt, and you feel like a little DIY (Thanks Patrick!!) :

    -

When the inverter overheats it cuts off the AC. You can also test this yourself, after the vehicle has cooled (in the morning?) the A/C should work fine, at least until the inverter overheats again.

If you choose to drive it, then slowly (and with the A/C off) so as not to revisit the overheating you described above- which can cause permanent damage to the inverter.

Thank you all for the replies. So I went ahead and ordered an OEM (the updated version) inverter cooling pump and Toyota coolant online (total cost like 120$ on Amazon). Then, I found a local auto shop about 5 blocks away that did the installation for 1.5 hrs of labor (total w tax was 163$). All of the lights disappeared, the MFD went back to normal, and the car runs great now -- everything works, AC included. Mechanic scanned the engine codes again and gave the car a clean bill of health. Thanks again!

Thank you for reporting back what worked. It will help the next owner.

This just happened to me. Reading on this blog I found out there is a recall on cooling pump. I took to dealer and asked them to replace this pump as per recall. This solved my problem at no cost to me.
