I know that this frequently a topic of discussion on the list, and I thought I'd add my two cents (or $800) to the topic.

After much debate I decided to go with the 7 year/75K Toyota Extra Care on my new Prius 4. Like all insurance, on average it's a bad deal -- you can't beat the house. But at slightly less than $200/year (4 additional years over the included 3 year warranty for about $800) it didn't seem like a terrible deal to have some additional peace of mind on all the gadgets.

What struck me as odd, is the price for TEC is the same for all model of Prius -- the C, V, Prime and all trim levels. There are more gadgets on the 4 than the 2, and the Prius 4 is about 25% more expensive car than the Prius C. It's also somewhat reassuring that Toyota is willing to write a 10 year/125K miles warranty for about $300/year for years 4 through 10. One could safely budget about $2,100 for repairs over 10 years on a new Prius and come out about even.

I bought it from an in state dealer, but not the one I purchased the car at. The dealer I bought the car at, offered the same TEC at about $350 more (ouch! not a good deal). If you're interested in the exact pricing or the deal PM me.

If I remember correctly, Toyota depends on the tire manufacturers warranty for the OEM tires and my manufacturers warranty specifically excludes OEM tires :(

Is the Toyota extended warranty worth it for 2017 Prius 2? Mine will end up costing 2100 which I am not feeling like is too much or do repairs cost more than that?

In my opinion the extended warranty is not usually worth it on a reliable vehicle like the Prius. It is really just a different marketing term for support or service contracts.
For the Prius they are almost pure profit fir the seller. You would better off investing that amount to have that plus interest if a major non-warranty repair were needed.

Dealer pushed us this after repeatedly telling them no. They tried to price it into the monthly payments. Their full coverage deal added 150$ a month to the payment. My jaw hit the floor. Told them they were crazy if to even try to add 7200 to the total purchase for insurance on a 24k car. I hate car dealerships.

Did you look at other dealers?
I drove 150 miles to the DC area to buy my Prius from a Gen 1 Prius salesman. It was a very good purchase transaction. We made some of the arrangements by email first.

The extended warranty on a Toyota is a waste of money in my experience.

True, but some dealers value a good purchase experience more than others. Trying to sneak in an extended warranty is not cool!

I normally don't buy extended warranties. I make an exception when I'm buying a new version of an automobile. Since I was buying the first model year of the Gen 4, I bought the extended warranty.

That said, extended warranties are usually not a good investment. But I think that's the wrong way to look at them. I look at them as insurance. For me, my automobile insurance has been, thankfully, a completely terrible investment. I've dumped tons of money in and gotten absolutely none out. I hope to have the exact same experience with my extended warranty. Since my Gen 4 is the first model year of a car that has undergone massive changes between Gen 3 and Gen 4, I wanted some peace of mind in case reliability became a problem.

It is always cheaper to self-insure. For me, it isn't as comfortable.

I went ahead and purchased the Extended Warranty. I got 5 year 125,000 mile one because I will be putting 20,000 - 30,000 miles/year on mine (mostly highway). This being my first hybrid, a lot could potentially go wrong with motors, batteries, cables, LCDs, etc. Why risk it. For me, it was about $1400 for it. This also cavers interior too, so (on a previous thread) if I have an issue with the driver's arm rest flattening out, I can get it replaced.
