I must be nuts

    Friend has a 2013 C-Max Energy. It's firmly in the "meh" category when compared to my Gen 3 PiP. It's definitely a better ride and the materials are better. However, the it infotainment system while flashy is just as disdainful as Entune. Read: useless. It's woefully slow loading up, navigation is hit or miss. Voice commands don't work any better. Ford Sync = Entune with emperor's new clothes. Also the Energi with the huge battery is useless. Put anything taller than a foot and you block the rear windows. The extra batteries take up that much space.

    Don't get me wrong, if you don't mind lower fuel economy, it's a much better vehicle than a PiP. The seats are more comfortable. The handling is better. Acceleration is way better. But no way is a C-Max going to cure my new car bug with $10k on the line and an existing Gen 3 Prius.

    I have heard that the Ford Cmax has tons of problems. Have you considered the larger Prius v ?

    Haven't considered the V, more than I want to spend unless I find one with high mileage, already have a Prius with a lot of miles. I haven't found anything on the ton of problems with the Cmax.

    I think it was first year that had problems. None of them are old enough yet to know how they will hold up. But it is a Ford. They're not known for the 350k that the Prius is known for.

    Really ??

    You can get 350K out of ANY vehicle........IF you keep pouring money into it.

    The evidence here would tend to indicate that getting even 200K out of a Prius without major outlays is likely rather rare.

    But there must be a reason people choose to keep their Prius so long that they aquire 300k or more. That would indicate that they really enjoy and trust the Prius more than other cars.

    Just an opinion, of course..................
    But I don't come to that conclusion at all.
    I think it is more like an obsession ....and Prius owners seem to be more prone to OCD that owners of other cars.

    Then, you SEE the reports of high mileage Prii because of your association.
    Do you go LOOKING for reports of other brands that go for really LONG mileages ??
    I bet there are some out there........of people getting over 200K with late model Fords and doing nothing but routine maintanance and "wear" parts like belts and hoses.

    A really LOT of people these days seem to only "know" what they can see.
    There is a huge world out there that you can't see.

    Sam, I owned a used car lot. I know what high mileage is, and how UNcommon it is. I seldom see cars with over 250k. Saabs and Volvos used to be the high mileage kings. Now it is the Prius.

    I think you have to look at the demographics of Prius owners. I don't think people choose to keep their Prius so long. Prius owners tend to keep their vehicles a long time. I don't particularly enjoy or trust my Prius any more than my Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. I actually don't enjoy my Prius at all. It's not a fun car to drive. However, I tend to keep all my vehicles a really long time because I want to maximize the value in all vehicles I purchase by keeping it a long time and amortizing its cost over a long period of time.

    There is no cure.
    But my observation is it's really hard to be tempted by new/different automobiles if you don't research them and/or visit car dealerships.

    Since you are simply emotionally doing what you want to do, I don't think anyone can answer what combo buy/sale deal is best. None of them financially on paper are good. So my answer is figure out what you want to do....and do it.

    With only a 25,000 mile per year average between 2 automobiles...I'm assuming that is spread between the two, and if the NEW ride is going to be a hybrid or electric, and if you really think the Lexus is "such a sweet ride", I might keep the Lexus. But that's just me.

    My son in law has a 2015 C Max and loves it. Get over 40mpg on the road and is super quiet and comfortable. This is really a less well known Ford that is really a great value. Since the C Max has the same tech as the Prius, let the Prius go.

    Thanks electric and virg, there's a new wrinkle thrown into the mix, Sat morning, a deer crashed into the left front of the Prius so I'll be getting an estimate tomorrow. Bumper cover that I replaced three weeks ago broken, headlight pushed back and down and the front point of the fender is bent and slightly buckled. The Ford salesman will be in Monday around noon so if he doesn't call, I'll just assume that they won't go for my price. Should be an interesting week, three Drs appts and body shop estimate, I need to go back to work, retirement is too busy.

    Update, the Prius is in the body shop, I stopped by yesterday and they already had the front stripped off. I went by the Ford dealer Monday evening and coughed up the extra $220 that we were haggling over. Paper work shows the price of the C-max $9420 and then TTL. We got home and about an hour later, the wife fell in the kitchen and broke her shoulder so we now have three cars and one driver. With a few miles on the C-max, I'm liking it a lot, more amenities and quieter than the Prius, although there will be a mileage hit. When I get the Prius back, I'll decide what I'm going to sell. Maybe I need to start a poll, which one should I sell, the Lexus or the Prius. I won't say, but I'm already leaning one way, though that could change.

    Is the damage going to "total lost" the car? Or repair cost is low enough the insurance company will pay for the repair?

    I think you will sell the Prius and keep the Lexus, because It seems to me you are really loving the quiet ride and extra amenities.

    I thought I'd kick this old thread and update. About three months ago, I sold the Prius to a neighbor and he's loving it. I took the C-Max on a 1500 mile trip to the east coast and averaged 41.3 mpg for the trip. Since that trip, I've put 11,000 more miles on the c and showing 51.2 mpg for that distance. I'm really liking the Ford, except the routine maintenance is a pain compared to the Prius. To replace the engine air filter, the whole engine cover has to be pulled out to get to the filter cover. Oil changes require removing the whole under engine cover and the cabin air filter replacement is a nightmare, really tight place to get to and have to collapse the filter to squeeze it into place. I haven't had to replace it yet, but the 12V battery is located in the right rear under the floor like the Prius, but a lot of stuff needs to be disassembled to get to it. I replaced the tires with Kumhos and learned a lesson, next tires will be Continentals, I'm still liking the C-Max and it now has 131,000 miles and uses NO oil. Another thing, I really miss the flat cargo floor in the Prius.
