I have a 2012 hybrid plug-in Prius, and I saw this post when I ran out of gas this weekend and was really worried I had to take it to the dealership. I just had to fill it past 3 gallons and it started back up. One Gallon was not enough. Just thought this might help someone.

    Comment on this old thread:
Oh, oh, oh! Now, I'm glad that I didn't buy a hybrid (didn't have the money, anyhow). I carry extra gasoline cans with me, if I'm going into the wilderness & may have a long way to go before getting back to the less than "highway robbery gas stations". Several times, I drove my cars' gas tanks to empty, before adding my gas cans' contents into the cars, so I would have an exact knowledge of my remaining gasoline.

Drive to empty? Well, that's at the risks of fuel pump wear.

No car made after 1990 reacts well to running out of gas.

I drive until all 4 tires have blown out. That way I know exactly how many miles they're good for.

Nah. They say that you'll over-heat the pump. But, that's for the 500HP cars driving 100+MPH, & drinking fuel at 10(+?) gallons per hour. Its not for vehicles getting 50MPG & pumping gas at 0.9 gallons per hour. Been running out of gas for 50 years & no fuel pump repairs yet.

Is that the life of the car, too.......... maybe the life of the driver, also?

Oh, good. My 1988 Ford Festiva is safe. But, my 2008 Hyundai Accent has run out of fuel several times. Add gas from my gas cans & away I go.
But, you are right. Out of fuel cars don't act like full of fuel cars

You are correct, the 1988 Ford Festiva had a carburetor, not fuel injection. So it is less prone to running lean on low fuel.
By 1989, "At the same time, the engine's fuel delivery system transitioned from carburetor to fuel injection," - Wikipedia

There is little chance your 2008 has a carburetor. "The carburetor remains in use in developing countries where vehicle emissions are unregulated and diagnostic and repair infrastructure is sparse." - also Wikipedia.

I wish you the best of luck.

I wish me GOD! He has kept me alive, when I could have died 20+ times over. Meanwhile, I shall stay away from hybrids till I can afford an EV that takes common five by 114.3mm wheels with 67 mm center bores. I've got lots of them from my Elantras & Craigslist & will save thousands just on wheels & tires.

I hiked a great deal in the Olympic National Forest and Park in the 1970's (4000 miles) and never once ran out of gas. I was not as close to the Cascades but I walked around Mt Rainier 3 times one summer. (Three Explorer groups, but one continuous trip for me) In 1981 I walked from Campo, CA to the south end of the Mt Adams wilderness area in WA. but my food drops all included hitch hiking, so no gas worrys.

I save some money just by using the wheels that come with my car.

You choose odd things to be proud of.

You seem intent on insisting that because you have been foolish, and yet also been lucky enough to not have had serious consequences, that everyone would be ok being foolish.

I recommend that you continue doing as you do, and others continue to do as they do. Luck eventually runs out, and consequences usually catch up. Carry on.

Nah! Just provin' that cars have run out of gas for 120+years. Fill them up & keep going. If someone points out the Emperor has no clothes.... then that person is odd. But, I'm happy all of you like the Emperor's new clothes. Some of you may actually believe that Emperor "don'T rump" is a human being.
