there is no consensus on batteries. everyone has a different opinion, and they have all had problems. i think it depends more on how you treat them than anything else.

Picked up the AutoCraft Platinum AMG battery this morning. Got them to do a battery check on the new battery and the old battery. The new battery was 12.5V manufactured 03/17 and tested at 485 CCA (rated for 410 CCA, 75 RC). Old battery measured 12.6V (right after 40min of driving) manufactured 04/10 and 210 CCA (I think the OEM was rated for 375 CCA). So the battery was the original battery, over 7 years old and putting out significantly less CCA.

The AutoCraft battery looked very good and was easy to install. It also is rated at 45 Ah where as the Optima battery is rated at 38Ah.

well done, but it should have been charged by them before installation. unless you do a lot of driving to charge it up, you risk another failure.
a new fully charged battery should read around 13v. my 5 year old battery reads 12.7

My commute is 60 miles each way. Do you think that will be ok? Or should I take it out tonight and charge it?

that should be good. i would invest 10 or 15 dollars in a digital multi meter, and keep track of it.

if the battery doesn't stay at least at 12.8 after being off over night, i would return it, and ask for a fresher one, fully charged.

Thanks. I've got a good multimeter, I will check what it reads tonight when I get home.

great. and again, you must let the surface charge dissipate for a few hours for an accurate reading. tonight, and in the morning before starting would be a great comparison.

Would it be fair to check it at the jump point under the hood? I only ask because that spot is easiest to access without having to open a door. (Pop the hood overnight and check it before getting in the car(or at least open the passenger door and pop hood so the driver's door doesn't kick off the brake accumulator pump). I assume the voltage will have some drop through the wiring from the rear

absolutely, that's where i check it, and exactly how i do it. less than a tenth of a volt drop, it's a pretty heavy cable.

Ok thanks. I ahve been keeping an eye on the voltage through the torque app and I am generally around 14.2-14.5 when the car is in ready mode, and 13.3-13.5 while shifted into drive mode. If I shut the car off, and then back on into "on" (not ready mode), I drop from 12.5 to 12.2 with the door open, and 11.8 with the headlights on. Quickly lower if left in the state for any length of time.

I think it time to stick a fork in 'er, she served me well

none of those really mean much, just the cold voltage in the morning. if it's original, just replace it.

    Yeah, a little fishy.
BUT as pointed out, if it is the original battery it's 7 years old and probably was nearing replacement anyway.

And I would look at it like this. Even if the dealership made a mistake and left lights on or some other mistaken drain on the battery?
If there was anything they could to to kill it so quickly...it probably was near death anyway.

    My biggest concern?
Let's hope it just IS the auxiliary battery, and nothing else.
    Dead Battery, easy fix.
Any other reasons the vehicle won't start....much bigger problems.

EDIT: Never mind...seems you have already installed a new battery and it sounds like it's going well.
