By this time with hybrid battery cooling experience and knowing it to be a potential issue, why wouldn't Toyota make it an easy to access maintenance item?

Lack of foresight? You can put the EGR in the same category methinks.

There's alarms and error codes that erupt if the traction battery gets even a little hot. Not to mention the fan cavitating and blowing at max RPM. Its not something you can easily ignore. I'm surprised this dealer didn't insist on doing a TB and injector flush. ;)

aren't spark plugs in there at 120k? i wouldn't expect bulbs to be a regular maintenance item, fix when broken.

You're right. I'm just thinking of the items that are inordinately hard to access.

there once was a car with a transverse mounted engine, with the plugs so close to the firewall, you had to remove the engine mounts and move it, iirc.

I think the timing chain cover reseal almost requires engine removal. Done with the engine in place it's almost impossible to do it right.

which would be fine, if they didn't leak prematurely.

I watched a very interesting (to me) documentary called " A Faster Horse " about the designing, building and release of a new Ford Mustang.
One of the things I took from the documentary, is while "We" may not notice a change, or look at an item and think a change is minor, every change to a designed automobile can have a unexpected ripple effect through the whole design.

So we can look at the fan set up and say "Why isn't it designed to be accessed better?". But depending on where a car is at in design and production, even a seemingly minor change like that, could be much more challenging than originally thought.

The main time I see this is on the 'prius c'. And i just use a little loop of duct tape and stick it on the 'dryer lint' looking buildup on the screen. Takes under 1 minute if you have ever done it before.
    300 bucks?

No need to buy a new filter unless the mesh on the old one is damaged. It can be easily cleaned.

I'd like to clean the filter in my 2010. Can anyone give me tips on that? The NutsAboutBolts video looked like it was for cleaning the fan.

You have a filter for your hv battery?

They didn’t come standard until I believe 2012.

I think so. I was at the dealership this morning for a fuel injector cleaning service and they recommended the fan cleaning and filter change. I think the fan was cleaned when I got my battery replaced, but I'd like to check out the filter myself (if there is one). I was just in my car trying to pry it off but I felt like I was going to break something so I'll go back to it later.
