My 06 Prius has 220k miles and I have to add 2 quarts of oil every 5k miles (seems to be getting worse). I have always had the oil changed at manufactures suggested intervals. I am a nut when it comes to preventative maintenance. Heck I even change the PCV valve when I change the spark plugs. I've read many threads on here and other than having the piston rings changed I have not found a good solution. I've tried adding Techron to 5 tank fills with no change. I saw this video on line and I'm wondering if anyone has tried this on a Prius? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Love my car, It's been very reliable and I need to keep it a few more years, until I'm done with school... Thanks!
Welcome to Prius Chat . While not on a gen 2 (which is what you have) I have reduced our 2010 Prius II 's oil consumption from a quart every 4500 miles to less than a quart between 10 k mile oil changes. I use BG Products EPR and flush the engine prior to draining the old oil out. I then use BG Products Moa with the new oil. I also ensure I only go 0-5 mph above the posted highway speed limits and have seen reduced oil consumption. My old man used sea foam in his 1999 Jeep Cherokee and saw great results (not burning oil but was hesitating and knocking bad). But keeping an eye on the dipstick and adding as needed is the key to keeping your Prius running strong for many more years .
Thanks for the Welcome and for your reply!.. BG EPR, hmm... I'll try that. Seems less evasive than the video.. BG products are really good. My cousin used it often in his shop back in the 80's
I have seen great results and know plenty of folks who have the same opinion . Whatever you attempt, keep us posted .
I use 44k once a year. It is concentrated Techron. I have worked with a local rep to better understand their offering, here is a conversation I had with him: [POLL] Excessive Oil Usage This is the start of what I have done (conversation with the rep later on in the thread ). Thought I would put the link earlier in so you could see @milkman44 's feedback. These are both Gen3's though. In regards to 44k, the components are petroleum distillates (naphtha, etc) so I wouldn't be concerned. But you can always ask their rep in your area (they are very knowledgeable and helpful). Hope that helps.
