Well, this may not be as simple as I thought.

GOAL: Install an OEM (from Toyata) backup camera on 2005 Prius w/NAV

I do a search, read a lot for a few hours, and am not sure if it is possible. A lot of post and info from sites about the backup camera say this,

"It was not available on the 2004-2005 model years - it was a new option beginning on the 2006 model year".

BUT.... When I look at the hatchback area where the camera WOULD be installed if it had one, there is a blankout plate. Which tells me the car was made with the option of putting a camera there.

I also here talk of different MFD's (lower resolution). But if the Pruis came with NAV it has the higher resolution and the camera is an option. Yes? No?

Also, different countries had different packages/options available. So if the 2005 Prius did NOT have the camera as an option in the USA, was it an option elsewhere? (had to be, or why would the blankout plate be there).

I have a 2008 Prius (my wifes car), that we are going to sell. It has a backup camera, can I take that camera and install it on the 2005? Will it work with the MFD?

Any thoughts or insights on this?

From what I've read, you're going to need a kit that allows for video/audio input on the MFD to pull this off on the 2005. Even with NAV, the wiring for the backup cam just does not appear to be there. Or at least, that's the conclusion that I've drawn. Lack of time/money/patience haven't allowed me to follow the bunny trail to its full conclusion with an install of anything, and I remain without a backup cam a year later.

    UPDATE:

I went ahead and took both the 2005 and 2008 (with backup camera) apart.

On the 2005, the outside does have a blankout plate the same size as the 2008 backup camera, (looks like they made the 2005 with the camera in mind) but the metal underneath does not have the hole cut out for the camera, plus - no plug.

So, that means no OEM camera.

But, is it theoretically possible to switch everything from the 2008 to the 2004 and have it work?

I think you're still SOL without picking up a DICE or other unit. I'm pretty sure the 05 NAV unit still lacks the input for the camera, even if you put in all the missing hardware.

I saw your other post where you bought a Gentek mirror w/ Homelink for your backup cam.... can you link me to everything that you used?

I think this would be useful for adding a garage door opener and backup cam to my car.
