Which battery data with Torque Pro?

    Hey guys I have Torque Pro set up now using the custom PID I got from Priuschat (pretty awesome!). What are some HV battery data points I need to be looking at that would show me things to be concerned about. Right now I have a display of the 14 blocks voltages and the overall SOC. I did a force charge by holding the brake and gas and charged it up to 80.5% and all the block voltages were between 17.0-17.2. Actually most were at 17.1 and three were at 17.0 and one was at 17.2 which I believe adds up to 239.2. And actually some of them were like .1 more but after turning the car off (but still having the lights/stereo on) some dropped just a touch and these numbers I listed are what I wrote down after a few minutes of them moving after the car no longer in ready mode.

    Does that look okay? What are some other data points I can look at that might tell me something? Also, should I do some testing like document voltages, then let the car sit for a day or so then look at the voltages again without putting it into ready to see how fast the numbers fall?

    I just redid another force charge but I did it slower this time and the voltages actually got up to around 18.5 during charging but then once charging stopped they all very quickly went back to 17-17.2 and stayed there. It appears that no matter if I'm driving, parked, charging, discharging all the blocks stay within .2 from highest to lowest.

    • Max Block Voltage
    • Min Block Voltage
    • Max Block Number
    • Min Block Number
    • HV Battery Current
    I believe that you can log with Torque, so look into how you can do that. Then do a force charge and then discharge while recording the data. Then export the log to a CSV file and import into Excel or similar. Graph the data and see what you got.

    Thanks for the link! I tried to find a thread about force charge comparisons a week or so ago but I guess wasn't typing in good search terms. I'm going to revive that one from the dead! :)

    I did have the min and max block numbers but they didn't seem accurate to me so I removed them from my display. I'll add them back and check them again. A block would be showing as lowest and another block would get lower but it didn't change to that block. Maybe it just looks for which is lowest or highest on average as opposed to changing every fraction of a second in order to make it more readable.

    I saw some on there about battery kw and battery power or something along those lines, but wasn't sure if they were of much use in terms of battery health.

    I'm going to jump on that old thread and see what I come up with...thanks so much dolj

    You can also get Torque Log Analyzer:
    Torque Log Analyzer: hv

    It plugs into Google Drive and does lots of analysis of the data you collect. Really great tool if you are a data junkie like me!
    I'm still learning to use it.

    Be carefull force charging above 17.1 volts per module pair. Each module has 6X 1.2 volt nmih cells.
    AT 17.1 volts thats 1.425 volts per cell. This is where bad chemical reaction within the cell start happening.

    Searches hi and low across the internet will not find what the fully charged voltage of a nickel-metal-hydride cell should be.. But you posted that force charging to 80% produced module pair voltages of 17.1 -17.3 (1.425 -- 1.44 volts per cell) thats as high as you should ever go. shutting the prius off at 80% chemical reactions will continue causing an increase battery temperature another 10 degrees F. I never shut off prius with soc over 68%.

    Add Hv Batt T2 to your android guages this is one of three available hv battery temperature sources.
    Hv Batt T2 always reads a few degrees higher than the other two sources..
    Try and keep temperature below 110 F or lower . Panasonic the manufacture of hv battery modules says something like 140 F is ok but cooler is better.

    Also add digital guages SFS4 and SFS5 on seperate torque screens.
    These are manual hv battery cooling fan over-ride controls to force extra battery cooling.

    You cant have two fan speed guages on the same torque page.
    So just change torque screens to select different fan cooling speeds.

    I run sfs5 all summer and sfs3 all winter here in las vegas.
    I have been running torque app for about 6 years with blu-tooth odbII connector connected all the time.

    Be advised that manual fan control overides prius automatic fan speed control..
    So if you've selected sfs3 and the prius cannot put the speed any higher when needed.
    Select any torque screen that doesn't have manual fan speed control and the prius will use automatic speed control..
