With my cars it wasn't noticeable at all (the last 6" of the bottom coil in each case). But I reached in and found the loose piece just sitting there on the spring seat.

I have the same problem, one cracked rear spring. I was quoted $550 to replace both by a reputable local mechanic this week. The dealer quoted me $213 to replace one spring. The dealer is less!
It sounds like this should be no more than one hour of labor to replace both. Or I could borrow some jack stands...

 

It's fairly straight forward R&R, just a lot of interior disassembly/reassembly to get to the strut mount nuts and bolt. Easiest would be to replace the entire strut assembly with something like a Monroe Quick Strut, no hazards/dangers in swapping the springs just bolt-on and go. Rear struts are about a buck-twenty at Rock Auto as an example.
