I am new to this site, and wasn't sure where to look for the answer. Anyways i'll get straight to the point. I live in Lubbock,tx but i am visiting in Galveston,tx. I recently bought a used 2005 prius with 193,000 miles, and last week the master warning light and the check engine light lit up. My dad ran a test ran on it and got the code POA80 and it said i need to replace the main battery. My question is where can i purchase another one? new or refurbished, either online or in store. I want to buy one from a reliable source but i can't afford to get it directly from the Toyota dealership. Thanks

This was quoted from one of our members in TEXAS

If you are around the Dallas Fort Worth area call Texas Hybrid Batteries. We offer mobile installation and 18 month warranties on our batteries. I would be curious to know why your battery failed so soon. We have rebuilt and replaced dozens of batteries and never seen one go so soon. Our normal price on the Gen 2 Prius Battery is $1100 and that's tax and installation included.

PriusChat won't let me put a hyperlink in right now but you can visit our website at if you google search texashybridbatteries. Good luck with your car.

welcome! new is around 2k. used or rebuilt is a bit of a crapshoot.
the most important thing is the reliability of the supplier. dorman rebuilt from an auto parts store probably has the best rep, but they are far from perfect. houston hometown hybrids is a member here.
too many people are stuck with early failure and no recourse. be careful and all the best.(y)

'05 with 193k? have we seen anything close to that in a 8/100 state?

Try AutoNation Toyota Gulf Freeway, Houston, TX. That dealership sells discounted Toyota parts over the web. You may be able to negotiate a reasonable price for a new traction battery.

JC, thanks for sharing my info.

Wendy, I operate my Prius specialty shop in Fort Worth. Like many have said on here, rebuilt batteries can have problems. Even the most experienced builders can have a battery die sooner than it should from time to time. Quiet a while ago I made the decision to only sell rebuilt batteries in my area because I wanted to be available to my customers in case they had any issues with their cars.

If you want to get a New OEM battery for your car I sell them installed for $2200. If you want to keep your car for the long haul this is the very best way to go. And Eric B just shared some great news, Toyota has now changed the 1 year warranty to a 3 year warranty on all new batteries. I haven't confirmed this yet with my dealer but I'm sure its true.

    Good luck with your Prius.

Asking same question in Pinellas County/St Petersburg, Florida, didn't want to make a new thread.

Is there a good choice around here for new main battery install? AutoNation wants $3800, a lot more than the $2200 in Texas above, and of course even higher than the $1000-1800 for the part online.

If there's a section of the site for good dealers for this sort of thing that I missed my apologies. Thanks for any good leads in advance!

not sure, but check with todd at tampa hybrids. i think texas hybrids price has gone up a bit, and you definitely cannot buy one on line for under $2,200. plus shipping.
a great price these days is around $2,600. installed.

Thanks again for all the help - questions:

What does the GreenTec purchase do for the Prius community as a whole? Improves the battery resale market? Or something else/more?
Definitely helps they travel and have a Tampa location. This Prius is a friend's, it was lurching and came up main battery. Gen 2, 2009.

The car was at 100,100mi and Florida isn't a CA-rules state, or it'd be covered under the warranty. Everything I can find says a failure this early is very rare. This post about cleaning up corrosion comes up high googling the problem, is it possible GreenTec or TampaPrius would be the type to do that kind of fix? Chances this is the kind of problem this battery is experiencing? St Pete is definitely a salty air region... .

She's currently waiting on a maybe from the dealer, AutoNation Toyota Pinellas, about fixing it under the warranty given it likely started the problem before the 100k mi mark.

I live just up the road in New Port Richey. Todd's the guy to see. He's over on US 41 in Lutz. He can sell you a new battery or one put together with all the cells out of a used but not so old car. I got one that had the cells from a 2015 transplanted to a Gen 2 battery case. I installed it myself, which saved a bit of cash and isn't hard to do, but he also installs them. Give him a call tomorrow and tell him Jerry Petersen sent you. Here's his web site. if automation balks, call toyota customer service and ask for goodwill warranty help. that is very early for a 2009 battery failure.

Please ignore the Greentec mention, as they appear to only sell refurbished -and I am sure Todd in Tampa could do you better all around.

Edited and changed the link in the above post to : BeeMax™ Replacement Hybrid Battery for Toyota Prius - Bumblebee Batteries

Not many on PriusChat have reported purchasing a 'New' Bumblebee HV battery (with or without installation).

Good point. There are still a few around the Bay area without electricity. I haven't checked in on him since just before Irma's arrival. We had very little damage beyond downed lines, a few blown over billboards and fences, and lots of limbs broken off of trees. Most likely, he's open and trying to get caught up on business.

He told me a few months ago that he no longer refurbishes batteries, if you mean by that to just replace bad cells. He replaces all the cells with matched ones from totaled cars or sell you a new battery.
