I've never heard of that????? Did you do the first few steps of the chicken dance (posted below)?

Start/stop engine (NO CHANGES over previous posts)
    -------------------
    1. Insert old fob into slot and remove it 4 times in a row, and insert it a fifth time but leave it in there!
    2. Open and close driver door 6 times.
    3. Remove old fob from slot. Car is in fob programming mode at this point. Red anti-theft light remains on.
    4. Insert new fob and leave in the slot for a full minute. Watch the blinking red anti-theft light on the dashboard. When it stops flashing and goes dark, your new fob is all set.
    5. Remove the new fob and you're done.

The 04 to 09 Prius with SKS uses three computers. Smart key, Immo and Body. The slot is control by the immo(immobilizer) computer. The rfid chip inside your key is not programmed if it doesn't start the car.

It sounds like it starts his car except when he puts it in the slot.

It starts using the SKS computer. When you put it in the slot, the immo computer takes over. Will not start if the RFID chip is not programmed even if sks is.

Weird thing is...I never seen the sks computer being programmed and not the immo. Usually its the other way around.

The only thing better than fishing for walleye is fishing for rainbow trout in Colorado. Enjoy the trip!

for those as myself, ignorant enough to look it up, please somebody elaborate
I got a used prius, only came with one fob. I've been wondering what hapens when the batery dies, if there is a way to start the car still, also whats involved in getting another fob dealer I understand is outrageus, thou I have no ideea what that amounts to, used ones may not be able to program, I seen the post about the transponder keys for $40 thou these do not have the remote and you must put it in the slot, looks different than the one wife keeps in her purse and opens the car dor for her byitself.

also I could not help myself and drove arround the block without the key see what hapens, the light came on but the car kept going, found that odd, if my key is too close to the window somebody could get it start and away they go. so much for that key beeing smart

The key has a built in RFID chip. Doesn't require power. The receiver is the slot inside the car.

    1) Take emergency key out of smart fob
    2) open door with emergency key
    3) step in car and put smart fob into slot
    4) press power.

The key you see for about $40 is the same concept.

I think I read about it, what do they go for on ebay and what does the dealer expects to get for one? not that I care about the dealer just trying to get some figures as to what they are supposedly worth and what a good buy might be, obviously theres, the plain $4o emergency/chip, keys.
also, I'm still concerned about those smaty keys, like I mentioned before, I left the house without the key, on purpose, I was expecting it to cut off, the light came on but the car kept going, that's not so smart I have to keep my key at the other end of the house as you could get into it and drive away otherwise, any thought on that?

When I got our Prius, I had similar fears such as yourself. I too have driven the Prius with the key away from the car. However I also found out that the car just won't start UNLESS the key is inside the Prius when you power up. I tried holding the key outside the window then pushing the power button. The Prius would not enter "Ready" mode. You might try what I did and see if your Prius will start if the key is outside of the car. I am not saying that it won't. What I am saying is that I could not get our Prius to go into "Ready" mode unless the key fob was inside the Prius.

As far as cost of the key fob goes, they are usually around $120 to $150 and then you add the programming unless you do it yourself with the chicken dance.

You might be interested in this string also.

Dealer will give you a brand new sealed key. Who knows what you will get on ebay. It's a coin toss. I've had customers swear up and down that they bought a NEW key and tried the chicken dance. It didn't work and when I connect my equipment, I can not add the key because it shows as being used. I don't know if by doing the chicken dance incorrectly if it messes up the key. The smart key alone at the dealer is about $160. New(supposedly) on ebay is about $120 and used vary from $40 to $80 depending on condition.

well my understanding is used keys are useless are they not, that be the case, the $40-$80 depending on condition, is that what they pay me to dispose of them?
as for driving it arround without the key, I don't remember where the key was when the car was started but during my drive the wife had it and she was next door, I'll check that.

Useless?? That's what the dealer has you think. They tell you that in order for you to buy the key from them. Most dealers will not program used keys due to that reason. They lose money!! I program used keys all the time.

I know this is resurrecting an old thread but I need help. I have a 2006 prius with what I believe are the two original key fobs for the vehicle. (I'm 2nd owner). I've read a lot on the forums here and have tried to program a new fob as they are becoming unreliable at times. I am attempting the 'chicken dance' but I am never able to get the car into programming mode for either the RFID or SKS systems. Upon further inspection neither fob will start the car while in the dash. As soon as I remove the fob from Dash I can push the button and the car will start. It seems I have SKS functionality but the RFID is not working. Weird and backwards I know. Most people are having issues with the SKS system. My proximity works great, but get them slightly wet and I cannot start car until completely dry since I have no working RFID. What are my options here? Any ideas? It seems you need a working RFID to program new fobs.
