I'm one week shy of two months ownership....just broke through the 38-mile barrier today.

  3. My car is still new so I'm still reading 25 miles but typically can get 34 miles. Nice to know that it smart-adjusts based on how one drives it.

I punched through 39 miles after last night's charge! (Three more days and I will have had the car two months.)

What are you doing to get range above 30. I am expecting when I get mine to leave the a/c on and drive to the speed limit and get 25+ miles when the temperature is between 10-25C.
Is that realistic or do I have to drive around with no a/c and slower than speed limit.
FYI - I am talking about 40mph or slower here as the vast majority of trips are around town not on the motorway.

For the record, my commute is 24 miles one way. I've yet to fully run out on a single drive to actually see what kind of range I would get.
The picture I posted was the 'expected' range after a full charge. That expectation does not consider air conditioning. However, since I know I'm not going to run out of charge, I use the A/C in ECO mode and set it to AUTO to within a few degrees of the outside temperature. For me, just having the air moving is usually enough to be comfortable. One of the screens actually shows you the expected range with A/C and without so you can decide.

As for driving techniques, there is a lot written about driving for efficiency. I myself am guilty of some. Short answer: no, you do not need to drive slowly and annoy people in order to get good mileage. Annoying Prius drivers make us all look back.

    Oh yeah, one more thing.
Since I know I'm going to get to work with range to spare, I do not hesitate to invoke Sport Mode. Truth be told, I know I'm not getting the miles/kWh I could if I really tried. But I hypermiled the crap out of my 2004 Prius and now I'm just having fun.

  8. Finally, got mine to say 30.5 miles. I expect this number to continue increasing as long as October stays nice and warm.

It's October with cooler nights (that's when I recharge)...is that the reason why I'm now only getting about 34 miles to a charge?
I had hit a peak of 39 just a few weeks ago (posting each new peak with enthusiasm).
Now morning after morning it's only showing ~ 34.

Yes, it is getting colder and the car knows it. With temperature dropping down to 30s, I am now struggling to got 30 miles on GOM, and even less on actual EV miles run. I think it's time to fill the tank.

What surprises me is that it's not that cold overnight here. Mostly 50s. My overnight charge this morning shows 34.6. I guess that's the new normal until winter arrives. Maybe it will then drop back to its stated 26 mile rating?

33 mile range already at only 300 miles on the odometer (and I'm not trying to hypermile or anything--just in-city driving at 30-45 mph without too much traffic).

50s is our daytime temp here. It seems the colder it gets, less range Prime will have for most part. For three months of driving Prime, I was never able to achieve above 34 on GOM. For last two month, I have been driving with EV mode only until it exhaust battery then recording actual EV miles driven on each charge. I was able to go above 30 miles actual EV driving only a few times. Now with temperature down in 30s, if I use AC in my morning commute, my AC ratio goes above 20% easily and EV range drops precipitously. I am not looking forward for the subzero temp in winter. For winter commuting , it probably is better to drive HV only in morning when temperature is always below freezing, and save EV mode for the drive back home in the afternoon. My question is when ICE is on with HV mode, does Prime utilize engine heat for heating cabin, or is it going to use only AC heat pump even with available engine heat?

I don't think the Power Mode has that much negative impact on the mileage, especially if you're mostly in EV Mode, as long as you drive conservatively; it's nice to have that "performance" if you need it. Also after the car exhausts its charge, the reversion to HV isn't so sluggishly unpleasant!! I've been strictly on Power Mode for over a month, and really like it. Traffic permitting, I can still drive like a Crippled Snail, (Slow Escargot!).

  15. In times like these I wish the Prime had as much glass on the roof as the Tesla S

Sure if you can drive while sun is out. For me it probably won't matter how much glass it has on top. Sun is not out when I leave home and the sun is long gone by the time I get out of my office in winter. :(

I just joined the forum last week to learn more about the Prime. I had one of the first first generation Prius in Portland: kept it for 8 years and then passed it on to my son. I’ve been driving a Fiat 500e (BEV) for nearly 3 years and am considering the Prime as a replacement.

The current electric range you are showing is, I believe, what we refer to as the GOM (guess O meter) in the Fiat 500e forums. Although the stated range is 84 miles, my GOM has ranged from under 80 to 120. I might pull out of the driveway showing 120, but the car would never actually go that far.

The GOM is based on recent history, so if I return home from a 10 mile drive in freezing weather, a couple of miles at 65mph, heater set to 70 degrees the GOM the next morning might only show 70 (or much less). If the next morning the car was pre-warmed in the garage, no heater used (just the seat heater), stayed on city streets at 25mph for 10 miles, I would likely see a higher GOM when I arrived at my destination than when I pulled out of my driveway.

The GOM, to me, is nearly useless. I did smile the one or two times I saw 120 though.

I really think the Prime would be perfect for us. Normal “commute” is 8 miles, so should be able to stay Electric even with the heater. Then great gas mileage for the infrequent long trips.

Welcome to the forum Craig. I see 33-34 EV every day on mine and I use it. Your situation sounds ideal for a Prime. I'm approaching 1,500 miles without my first fill-up yet. That has a 500 mile road trip in there as well.
