I'm not wasting anybody's time. The guy posted an item as used (fully functional) and when it arrived it turned out to be broken. I'm legally and morally in the right to return this for a refund. The fact that he decided to not test it is his decision and any time or money he loses because of it is entirely his fault. Do you think Best Buy or Walmart staff personally test the items they sell in retail? The items come sealed so the answer is obvious: they do not. Given that you know this (as it is obvious), are you telling you wouldn't "waste their time" by returning a TV you bought for $1,000 that they said was new (functional) that you plugged in and it turned out to be broken?

Anyway, the guy probably found it in the dumpster (maybe he owns a trash collecting business servicing a hospital or lab) and wrote up the description to only include testing up to the point where no problems are obvious and explained away the lack of the remaining testing due to lack of knowledge despite apparently having "technicians" to "verify" any faults.

That would be a good idea for an item marked and priced for parts/broken. This was used and supposed to work. If I take it apart, the guy will say I broke it. Not worth the risk when I can just get the $ back IMO.

If Walmart sold me a TV they said was new, I'd expect it to be new.

If an electronics refurbisher sold me an instrument they said was "used, refurbished, fully tested", I would expect it to be that.

If some electronic surplus reseller sold me an electronic instrument, telling me explicitly "Partially Tested: Unit was tested for power only. Limited knowledge, tools, adapter, and/or accessories to test further", I would expect that to mean what it says. What's hard about this?

Now, I did once buy some stuff from a "refurbisher" that did say it was fully refurbished and tested, and I began to suspect that particular outfit was doing nothing of the sort, but just accepting returns from complaining customers, and using other customers to find out if the stuff was really broken or not. Ticked me off, but I never got very far bending them to my will. And they were clearly claiming to refurbish and test. This seller was not.

There are new items that are duds all the time. So you'd keep it and eat the $1,000 loss since you feel it matched the description? It's still new, just defective.

I think he meant that in a MUCH broader sense.
At least I know that I do.

In your jump start, what sort of cable AWG did you use on both terminals?

It's been a while since I've done this, but it's time to throw the BS flag again..........primuspaul, if you sit back as a lurker and read this thread, you are coming across as a d........ . You don't appear to have significant electrical knowledge, yet you want to "cheap out" on everything. Cheap safety gloves, cheap equipment, cheap charger...This is stuff that can get you dead. You buy cheap crap off ebay that, in your words, is worth the risk, and then want to return it. You're working your way toward being one of "those" customers.

Copied and pasted straight from their auction:

We are an IT/Electronic Surplus Reseller. A lot of items we receive and sell our staff may have limited knowledge to gurantee that the item is fully functional. As a result we like to pass the savings on to our customers and sell at below cost.

To me, that clearly states they do not guarantee the item is fully functional, as they are not able to fully test it. Hence, they offer it at a discount since the buyer is assuming some risk.

Quit being a cheapxxx and buy the right equipment for the job. The "tried, true and safe" wheel has been invented already. Use it, or just be quiet, do what you're going to do and stop asking for advice.

Men! That was a ...one. That "copy and paste" stuff really sjmhowed they weren't really gonna bear the risks.

I think its cool one invests in something original, than trying to be cheap.

It was a true emergency situation.
We used solid copper house wire that we dug out of a nearby junk pile.
    12 gauge maybe?
