So far I am finding myself entertained by TRYING to use some gas. The car came with a full tank, and, since I can go about my day to day driving on battery alone, I don't want a full tank of gas to just sit unused, so, I'm forcing it to use the hybrid engine, but, after a week, the gas meter has barely moved. I really want to get down to a quarter tank before I go back to my usual battery usage. I figure if I plan to go out of town I can always fill up then :).

What I found is the fuel savings each year of our 52 MPG Prius were equal to one car payment. With the Prime, I've only had it for six months and paid for five tanks, ~11 gallons each (some were partial.) With the electrical miles costing less than half the gas miles, I'm pleased.

Hi Amy and welcome! I don't foresee myself using much gas either, but I'll leave the tank full since a full tank has less chance to be exposed to oxygen. Oxidation is what destroys gas quality. You'll use it soon enough come winter time, and who wants to refuel when it's -20F and the wind is blowing. It's an extremely efficient setup, even in EV when you are playing around. Went to my daughter's house tonight and back, typically a 20 mile round trip with lots of hills and 55 mph roads, and still had 8 miles left in EV. And imagine the Advanced MSRP was only $600 more than my PiP base MSRP. Man what a car.

Congratulations on your new Prime! I am still in the waiting game. We ordered mine on September 14. They are telling me it will be December before it gets here. The waiting is killing me. I pass the time reading Prius Chat! LOL

Were you lucky enough to get your allocation on the first try? That was part of the long wait for me.....

That sucks. Many of us have done the same waiting game. It seems like forever but it will show up. One good thing is you will get the new NAV map that comes out in November.

You can get them immediately on the coasts and drive home. You can even get extra rebates and better deals. I read that on Prius Chat, then found one a dealer would hold for me in New Jersey. At that time an extra 3k rebate was available from Toyota, right off the purchase price. Flew into Newark, took a Uber to the dealer and had exactly the Prime I wanted. I didn’t mind the drive back to Michigan. Then I canceled the order at the local dealer. They are still getting that car because they have no problem selling them. Love the car.

    Intriguing rationale Bob,
now i gotta run those kinds of calc's out of curiosity for She-who-must-be-obeyed's model X. Let's see....
Most 500+hp AWD SUV's >5,000Lbs do well to get ~15mpg.
    12K miles/year
    15mpg ÷ into 12,000 miles
    800 gallons
    x $3.20
    ~$2,560 saved in gas cost/year ?!

That's over THREE lease payments !!

and - between our >8kW rooftop PV array & already included supercharging - the electricity cost is paid for .......
I don't know if it's necessarily a given, but it would seem the bigger & more inefficient the land barge is, the more you would save on fuel costs!!
I think that kind of dovetails into what @austingreen says, that you can actually save more on fuel - by increasing an Abrams tank's fuel efficiency from 0.6mpg to 1.2mpg - than if you merely increase a 60 MPG hybrid all the way up to 98MPG. Hard for me to wrap my head around that.

I would have used these EPA numbers: Compare Side-by-Side

    • ($4,250) / 5 years - 2017 Tesla Model S AWD - 90D
    • $10,250 / 5 years - 2017 Bentley Mulsanne EWB
    • $14,500 / 5 years ~= $2,900 / year
The Model X is under the SUV class:
    • ($3,750) / 5 years - 2017 Tesla Model X AWD - 75D
    • $13,500 / 5 years - 2017 Mercedes-Benz G550 4x4 (Special Off-Road Model)
    • $17,250 / 5 years ~= $3,450 / year
I used the EPA vehicle class groups and compared the top and bottom vehicles in that class. Of course one could change the criteria and not go to the bottom like the Mercedes-Benz which I suspect could go over unpaved areas that would sink the Model X to the axles.

My fuel calculations were of earlier generation Prius versus ordinary, similar sized gassers. But we could do the extremes as easily: Compare Side-by-Side

    • ($4,250) / 5 years - 2017 Toyota Prius Prime
    • $2,250 / 5 years - 2017 Volkswagen CC 4motion
    • $6,500 / 5 years ~= $1,300 / year
This is substantially larger than one month's car payment but my comparison was to a more compatible car or my earlier 1991 Camry.

Yeah - YOU can tell my wife to drive less. Let me know how that works for ya.

No doubt the MB runs better in sand. btw - WOW!!
That 4x4 MB only gets 11 MPG. Unbelievably paltry.
Perhaps a more fair comparison would be the hybrid Lexus RX AWD SUV, which gets a blended 30 mpg. Although both the X & RX are AWD (and the RX is a far cry from 500+hp), neither the X nor the RX are vehicles you would ever see doing the Baja 1000.

Even against the Lexus RX epa, that's STILL more fuel cost per yr than our lease payment, & almost 2 payments.
    BTW
I actually HAVE seen one X, that was decked out for off-roading with serious knobby tires. He must have had the air suspension extra low as the tires looked like they were barely clearing in the well - and otherwise it would be riding maybe 4" higher.

Sorry the picture isn't more clear but he was pulling away at light speed
