I don't think you or anyone need to justify WHY they might want a Prius.
If you want to go from a 2016 Corolla to a used Prius?
People make vehicle changes for far less tangible reasons.

Having relatively recently gone in the opposite direction...Gen 3 Prius to 2016 Honda Fit..I can tell you, that you can expect the MPG with The Prius to be better.

Despite the numbers Toyota sites for Prius city MPG, I found my city driving MPG really hinged a lot on numerous factors. Seasonal temperatures, duration of the city drive being the two biggest. Short trips in cold weather, and The Prius would return pretty standard ICE like MPG numbers. Although I would also say, The Prius at it's worst was better than The Fit at it's best.

Where I thought The Prius really shined was as a long road trip vehicle. On a long freeway drive? I could get the MPG numbers way above 50 mpg. I was routinely happy and impressed with how far I could get on a tank of gas, on a long road trip.

But despite extrapolating out the potential cost of ownership of one vehicle vs. another?
If you want a Prius...go ahead.
    The MPG will be better.

The last couple of years of our Gen 2 with short trips were netting 35mpg for us. Of course during the glory days, the Gen 2 was getting 50mpg but yes if it's healthy, it should be above 40.

My commute is just a touch shorter than yours (no highway). My Gen 3 pulls 47-50 mpg round trip (probably closer to 42-45 as we approach the freezing mark).

    You're welcome.

If you want a prius, buy a prius. This has nothing to do with saving you money.

You're giving up a 2016 with less than 36k miles to get a 2015ish car with more than 50k miles and pay $2000 to $3000 more. The gas savings will maybe equal the $3000 after you drive 100k miles.

    Where's the savings?

I had a friend who started a taco business, bought a new truck, paid $1000/mo for the loan, insurance, etc. He made $1000/mo on his venture. So if he didn't by the truck, he wouldn't have to work

It has everything to do with saving money. I leased the corolla, and intend to buy the Prius with much lower monthly payments, and will be paid off in the same amount of time if I kept the corolla. Gets better mileage, more reliable, etc etc etc. Anyway, enough of your opinions.

I've done the math, made the choices based on Science and my wallet. One dissenting nonsensical opinion doesn't mean anything to me nor will it change my decision. I will be happy to start saving money and drive more efficiently.

AFAIK, it needs to be a California car (or purchased and registered from another CARB state). So, if the owner originally purchased the car in Nevada, then moved to Los Angeles a few years later and sold his car there....I don't think that particular Prius would qualify for the higher warranty. Likewise, I'm in Nevada and purchased a Prius from California. I won't be receiving the higher warranty, either.

My driving habits aren't yours, my decisions on what car to buy aren't yours, I don't care what your car gets for mileage frankly. I've driven enough Prius vehicles for work in both city and highway to know what my future 3rd gen will get with me driving it. End of story.

You should buy a Prius, I recommend it. I'm sure you'll take my advice
