Hi. So I am extremely new to this whole thing. I've read a whole bunch of threads but everyone gets different answers.

My dad just gave me a 2007 Prius in August. And just last month someone hit and run me on the passenger side. Ever since then I've been having constant issues with my poor baby ):
*The only light on at the time was the red triangle of death, yellow exclamation point and the little red car*

Well as I was driving the car just didn't want to accelerate. So I'm like crap I better pull over. So I do and my car just dies. It says to add fuel but I had 3 pips of gas... I buy a little gas tank and put a gallon in. Still says I have no gas.. I go back and get another round. Same thing.. Then every single light pops up on the dash. Maintenance light, check engine light, the red triangle of death, the little yellow exclamation point. Then on the screen it has the main battery light on and the little red car with the exclamation point too.

My hubby says maybe we can disconnect the side battery and viola! *After a couple hours just trying to get her to turn on..* The car turns on and we were able to get it home. We get it home and just does the same thing... Just died completely. Is it the battery that needs to be replaced? If so, how do I know if it is still under the warranty. I cannot tell my dad cause he will just kill me finding out the car messed up after only having it a few months. My sisters never had any issues with their Prius. Seems I am the only one who always has car issues.

Thanks all for taking the time out to help me!

HV (High Voltage) in need of replacement.
Lack of acceleration b/c no assistance from the electric motor.
Disconnecting then reconnecting the 12V TEMPORARILY brought the car bcak to life.

No comprehensive insurance? No witnesses/security camera to the hit/run?

Accident realistically had no effect on the HV Battery dying. All batteries will die, just a matter of when/where. Just a coincidence that both happened at nearly the same time.

When did your dad buy the car? If Nevada is a CARB State, you will have 10yr/150K mile warranty on the HV Battery. Pretty sure Nevada is NOT a CARB State; you will have 8yr/100K HV Battery Warranty. If you are a little outside of warranty (time/mileage), you can always ask for goodwill assistance from corporate Toyota. Sometimes they are generous and provide some assistance. The more business your dad has been giving Toyota via paid dealer maintenance, for this car, the more inclined they are to help. NO Guarantees. To even go down Goodwill Assistance, requires you to pay for a dealer diagnostic, $100+, then you ask for help when outside of warranty.

So find out when your dad bought the car to see if you are In or Out of warranty, then see how much service was done at a dealership.

Any pictures of your accident? Are the wheels/steering messed up?

These lights came on right after the accident? Or they were on? This combo of lights is the car telling you it surrenders, stop driving me.

Was it a hit and run while you were driving, or while you were parked?

I can't believe your dad would not be on your side for a not at fault crash.

Anyway, is the damage to the side of the car bad enough to have damaged the HV cables (the big fat orange ones) that go from the HV Battery at the back to the Inverter at front? If so, you may have a HV isolation leak issue. Hence why the car went when you disconnected the 12 V. This is a one time fix per start up though, so don't think you can do this forever, without getting the HV isolation leak fixed, if that is what it is.

One way to know for sure is to get the DTCs (diagnostic trouble codes) read by any competent hybrid mechanic. The car is pretty good at telling you what it is not happy about.

Oh god. There are so many replies. Either way thanks all. The car has just been sitting there since the issue. Haven't touched it since it died out on me. Dad bought it from a third party. I think in Texas. He has so many prius' he doesn't even know where he got each of them. I mean all my siblings all have prius. From what I know he got them in Cali, Texas, and New York. Which one mine is from I have no idea and I doubt he remembers either. My brother and myself both have the white ones.So he'll probably get confused.. I did ask for footage and they said they would look at it and never got back to me. After countless attempts I just said **** it and dealt with it. The only lights at the time that came on were the triangle of death and the little orange exclamation point. I did have insurance just not full coverage at the time... So yeah insurance wouldn't do shit for me unless I had proof. The side passenger was hit. I can take a picture when I get home if I remember. As for telling my dad, the main reason I don't want too is cause he's given me cars in the past that all end up smart up within the few months I have it so I just sell it for the price he got and deal being carless. It sucks but I tell him I need a good working car. I can't afford repairs. Plus he always tells me too after I get it don't bother him, so I don't.. She has.... about 124000 miles. Not too exact but I know it's around that area. From what my husband told me he was at a bar and someone hit him.. I did get you know like someones else point of view like hey does this look like someone hit me or I hit something? Cause i know god damn smart well when my baby is in my possession i take care of her cause I kept nagging about wanting a prius. Finally got it and he ruined her...

You will have to have the diagnostic trouble codes read for any of us to do much good for you. You will need a code reader that is compatible with the Prius as not all are.
