2004 Prius, 285,000 miles. Daily driver.

Shortly after starting it up and driving two blocks, the red triangle popped up and the car lost power. I coasted it to a stop. When running the codes, POA72 was the only one that came up. I did a run through on all the cells in the hybrid battery, all are 7.5-7.6. I also replaced the main relay (one with the white wire support) inside the hybrid battery. Still gave same code as before I replaced this. Any ideas?

I'd say you are looking in the wrong place.

    P0A72 = Generator Phase V Current.

This would indicate the transaxle or inverter as candidates.

To be sure you need to take a 2 subscription ($15) at techinfo.toyota.com and look at the diagnostic troubleshooting tree for code P0A72.

BTW, your code reader is most likely adequate.

    Thank you, both.

Does the inverter go bad or just the cooling pump?

It is not necessarily the inverter or the pump. That is why I recommend you look at the actual diagnostic troubleshooting tree, this will guide you through a logical process to find the most likely cause.

But if the inverter cooling pump is not performing that will need looking at too. However, this code doesn't point there. That would be more likely a P0A78.

I have tried to subscribe to the techinfo.toyota.com site by clicking the "subscribe" button. It goes to a blank screen.

Anyone else get a blank screen?

you can check the pump by looking in the reservoir for movement while the car is ready.

There are a few here that use Tech Info regularly, @ChapmanF, being one of them. Hopefully, someone will chime in with some guidance.

At the risk of "teaching grandma to suck eggs", you did create an account first, right?

Do you have any browser extensions such as NoScript in use?

I am a NoScript user, and I know I have to tell it to allow a few domains before the techinfo stuff works.

Or maybe it's simpler at the moment: I clicked the Subscribe button just now and got a "site is down for maintenance" page.

I have tried to subscribe on several different computers through both the Google Chrome and Firefox browsers. All came up with a blank screen after I Click subscribe. I'm thinking it is still down for maintenance. I will try later today. Thank you.

I think my problem with being unable to access or subscribe to the techinfo site is not having Windows 7 or 8. Did confirm that it is a POA72 code with my new mini vci reader. Very frustrating to not be able to access to find out what this code is.

I'd be surprised if it needed old versions of windows to work properly. But not entirely surprised.

Back to your code, there should be freeze frame data for this code, P0A72, which is signified by the snowflake icon (yes, that is what that is) to the left of the code on the screen. (If you saved the data, you can go in offline and look at it, you don't need to be connected to the car.) You are looking for 5 lines that are labelled Detail Data 1 to 5 (or something very similar). These detail data codes are call sub-codes and are helpful to direct where to look in more detail when troubleshooting. Can you see if there are sub-codes and what they are please? In addition, can you tell us what ECU posted the code – this is the detail on the very left of the page in red.

    Thanks.

I called the Techinfo number last night. Apparently, Google Chrome and Firefox both recently did updates to their browsers. These changes have made it impossible for new customers to set up an account through the site using these two browsers. Techinfo is working to correct this. Internet Explorer is currently the only browser allowing access to set up a new account. I was able to get in using IE. I did run the code (POA72-328) on our Prius and researched the diagnostic info on Techinfo. It appears to be the main sensor of the generator inverter. I'll pick up the sensor today and replace it this evening. Should be an easy fix.

Thank you for all the help and replys.

I ordered the main sensor of the generator inverter from our local Toyota dealer and installed it this evening. According to the diagnostic information on TIS that is where my 2004 Prius is malfunctioning. It still came up with the same code and would not clear. Exact code is POA72 328. It is all inverter related. Could it be that the whole inverter has gone bad? While in that area, I felt the cooling pump and it is vibrating and there is movement in that reservoir. Not sure what my next step should be.

It is possible, albeit a final conclusion.

The workup for this code/sub-code combination indicates the trouble areas to be
    • Wire harness or connector
    • with converter inverter assembly
The diagnostic troubleshooting procedure would have you test the wiring harness and connector for problems and repair/replace. If the harness and connector test ok, then the conclusion is the fault is in the inverter assembly and the inverter assembly should be replaced.

This link: P0A72 | Diagnostics – Hybrid Control System | TIS is an excerpt from the Hybrid Control System repair manual, which should be identical to the information on TIS, and has the procedure for checking the wiring harness and connector.

If you do need to replace the inverter assembly, look to the second-hand market as these are quite cheap compared to new, and the low failure rate means the second-hand ones are reliable and in good working order, as always though, caveat emptor.

    Thank you.

I have ordered the high voltage gloves. They should arrive on Tuesday. I plan to do the wire harness test that evening.

Am I correct in reading that the testing should happen with the high voltage connector in place and the 12v battery connected?

All other systems seem to be clear of trouble codes.
