On a private road the other morning, I happened to test my Gen4 vs a 2011 Prius from a standing start up to 60mph, and I was surprised that despite pedal to the metal, my Gen4 was neck and neck and could not get past the older Prius, not even by an inch. I tried this test a number of times, and each time, the result was the same.

I thought Gen 4 was supposed to be a little bit quicker than the older model?

ROFLMAO Your preaching to the wrong group! I think most here are interested in if our Gen4 is getting 52 mpg vs. our old Gen. 2 getting 51 mpg. I always joke when I was young I cared more about getting a new 4bbl. carb for my Duster now I car more about pulse and glide.

yeah, i doubt we'll see any pri getting faster anytime soon. but if sedans catch up in mpg's, somethings gotta give.

That's correct. 0-60mph remains the same. It's slightly faster initially because they've tuned the electric motor for low end grunt (that's why everyone who drives the new Gen 4 around the city says it feels more peppy).

Also the hp rating is simply a change in the way they measure net horsepower. It should be roughly the same as the Gen 3 (maybe a few horses down but not 13hp if you were to compare the published numbers of each). The Gen 3 was rated at 9.8 but I doubt it... it's more like 10.5 secs.

The Prius has all the power any adult could need, but not all the power any boy could want.

If you want to impress me with street legal acceleration, it will cost at least $250,000. Or get something with only two wheels. :D

Also, there are variables from machine to machine even in the same model and year.

Still, I'm a little surprised at this because I thought I'd seen or heard early on that the gen 4 was a little stronger than gen 3. Either they were wrong, or I'm inventing memories.

If you count both traveling and refueling time needed to reach any great distance, I suspect the Gen4 should be the fastest.

And even more so if the amount of fuel available is capped. At any fixed target MPG, the Gen4 should be able to sustain the highest MPH.

I remember reading one of the first Motoring Journalists commented that it was "quicker off the mark" - referring to launching from a traffic light. I don't recall any figures were given, more a "seat of the pants" "gut feeling" (to mix metaphors).

Yeah it's slightly quicker (And does feel like it) from 0-50 or 0-60km/h. Beyond that to 100km/h, it's slower so the average of the entire 0-100km/h time is the same as the Gen 3.

I had a VW Microbus in the '70s with a ZF Auto, but also BIG (thirsty) jets in the twin Carburetors (if you don't know what a Carburetor is - it was a pre-Fuel-Injection thingy), the ZF had been tinkered with too. It was quick off the mark - for about 2-4 metres, by which time the V8s in the next lane overtook and disappeared. Fun - legally.

It's no speed demon, but it certainly seems peppier than my Gen 2 was, especially in PWR mode.

Friend had a 2005 Camry with the V6. It would be competitive with those V8s going to 60mph. It's a freakin' family sedan. Why do we think we need to go so fast to the next stop light?

Good video throughout, or start around 7:10, for the high speed test:

Given how virtually every Prius here is a taxi, I figured that a 6 year old Prius with probably 100k miles and up would be maybe down on power compared to when it was new. Yes, off the line my car was slightly ahead, but once we got going we were both level.
