There is no freaking way I will buy a pure electric car in less than 10 years!!
I just navigated from Anaheim, CA to Costa Mesa, CA, in a 28 mile loop, to see a couple of clients in Costa Mesa. I do this type of trip as much as 3 times a day, with occasional blips to 150-300 miles. I tried to find, then access, then use chargers at 3 locations: CCCD (Coastline Community College...), Ikea, and AAA (Socal Autoclub).
Just trying to locate any facilities was ridiculous: no standardized mapping with CORRECT information, and on, and on. It took me almost an hour just to find out where charging stations exist where I happened to be!
I tried CCCD: gated parking; couldn't even get on the property to locate a station. Why wasn't this fact published??
Ikea: finally found a cluster of 4 stations, 3 occupied, 1 not working, all BLINK brand (never heard of them) for which a member card was required to pay, which of course I didn't have!
AAA: 3 or 4 stations (I'm getting frustrated at this point), and as usual no free space, all for a fee.
    CONCLUSIONS:
Way too early to buy EV-only cars in my area.
    Manditory Improvements:
    1) Mapping apps that provide accurate location, type, and availability of each station. Currently this is a MESS!!
    2) Painted green lines connecting parking lot driveways to charger stations, so you can actually find stations which are frequently tucked away.
    3) 5-10 charge stations at all parking lots over a certain number. Gas stations should ALL have charger stations.
    4) Immediately putting up 110 Volt outlets (no charger) to at least 4 designated parking spots, for quickie topping off your battery. This is particularly useful for cars like the Prime which charge quickly.
If you know going in that you can get juiced at any gas station or 90% of parking lots, you're much less likely to suffer from range anxiety!!
This will take money and the tenacity to achieve, but the current situation is completely unacceptable!!

couldn't agree more. my fascination with bev's is predicated on round trips from my home evse.
i would never try to travel beyond that range until it's as comfortable as a gasser.

And Mr. Bisco, if you're faced with daily unpredictable range needs like me, you must either use a plug-in or you're stuck with a, God forbid, Gasser!! The plug-in hybrid is the car for today, and for years to come; it gives us plenty of reliable, cleaner range, while pacifying, for the time being, the oil industry. The Prius Prime, a Viable Economical Transition Automobile, VETA, until the pure EV's and their infrastructure have gotten their act together!

Isn't that the light that flashes when the fuel gets low? Mine has a solid segmented bar, though.

With Plugshare, you can leave a comment asking for help finding an EVSE.

  11. Well the ideal situation is to have the option to slow-charge at home, at your convenience, which will allow you to go on short trips for a few miles, and then pay a higher fee for ultra high-speed charge. There was some discussion of extreme high current fast recharging batteries...and if that can scale up, then that will (eventually) become the new "gas station." There are still technological breakthroughs to work out concerning battery energy density (per volume and per kilogram), capacity longevity, cold and heat tolerance, efficient manufacturing, station and charge availability, etc. I think that it will take a generation at the current rate before it all becomes a feasible reality.

I just did a map search for free L2 charging stations in my area and was surprised that there are some, even though they are more than 8 miles from me. Still, I had no idea there were any at all. More of them is better, of course.

every single J1772 type plug anywhere around me are located at car dealerships... and not a single one of them a Toyota dealer! Even the friggin dealership where I bought my car (which currently has 7 primes on their lot) doesn't have a charger. WT??

When I bought it and they gave me that free card (which i'm never going to use), they told me to go charge at the nearby BMW. Just plain stupid really.

If you want to see something funny, go search for chargers in Bowling Green, KY (home of the Corvette).

My day to day schedule fits in the ~28 mile EV range but I have weekly round trips that run around 95 miles with only one chance to slow charge for about one hour at the half way point, so some gas will be used. I also have a need every 3 weeks or so to do a one day ~550 mile round trip. The Prime is ideal for me. The majority of my monthly miles are on EV but I still need that occasional breakout range. A pure EV vehicle can't do what I need in the places I need it with out a lot of infrastructure and or faster charging battery technology. The Prime handles this with ease.

I think the battery tech will come as will the infrastructure, but I need something today.

On the flip side, a large portion of households in America could replace one of their cars with a BEV, and only need to have home charging for it.

Are they actually EVSEs, or just an outside outlet?
The one EVSE I've actually seen was behind the strip mall.

Just a reminder that, even with all these travails, you folks are still having better luck finding free recharging stations than I have finding free refueling stations for my non-plug-in.

(FWIW, I actually do have one 'free' station available to me. It can be described as 'the bank of Dad', but the round trip distance to get there is greater than my car's fuel range.)

You are an outlier of course :p

The fact is the majority of people it works for. But there are some people it won't work for. You are one of those people. I love electric cars but I am not trying to force everyone to have one. I do believe 95%+ of the people could use one tomorrow for all their travel needs. But there will always be people who drive many miles continuously that it won't work for. Even with Tesla introducing the first BEV semi, I think that will fail. Trucking is an industry where it needs to be moving for many hours. With road trains and multiple drivers in the cab, they move almost 24/7 and down time is not possible.

Everyone should have the right tool for the job. A BEV is the right tool for most people and they don't know it. A HEV or PHEV is the right tool for people like the OP who do daily drives. EV it in town, ICE it on the highway, win-win for efficiency of energy and time. I travel thousands of miles a week. And most of that is not electric, but on a jet. But I can do the final 80 miles on electric and then all my in-town driving on electric. Flying a fully loaded plane is more efficient than driving cross country anyways.

My BOD was 6,000 miles away, and he too has moved on to the Nefertiti Underworld! He and my mom would have adored my Prime Advanced!! I wasn't looking for FREE stations, just regular pay sites. I think it might be easier to get free 110volt hookups at hotels, parks, friends, and clients' businesses than pay stations.
