Have a 2012 v 5. Thinking of trading in for a new one. Are there any major differences between the two year models? Am aware of screen size for display but other than that ???
Also, I heard they are discontinuing this model, Pruis V, after 2018. Is this true, and if so, why?

    Thanks,
    JJ

They've improved the crash safety of the vehicle - The 2015 and newer models achieve a Good rating for the small overlap crash test.

The LED headlights on the Prius v Five also achieved a Good rating in the new IIHS' headlight tests, pretty much the only one to do so (others were Acceptable or Poor).

Graphics on the 5" MID were improved as well as the new set of MFDs as you've already noted. (They're either 6.1" or 7". They're no larger than yours).

The discontinuation is a rumour but it has some reasoning to it. The RAV4 Hybrid is handily outselling the Prius v. It has standard AWD, the ride height and the SUV stigma that people like and apparently the 10mpg hit is worth it.

There have been spy shots of Toyota testing a vehicle with the front end of a Prius and the rear end of a Lexus NX that journalists have speculated might be the next gen Prius v. It doesn't look anything like the current Prius v but more like a crossover like the Kia Niro or what the RAV4 used to be before it grew in size.

The v is a station wagon and the 2017 hatchback is a newer generation. (The 2017 v will be mechanically identical with newer safety electronics)

World wide, there will be a new 2019 v, we are not sure if it will be imported to the US. It is possible no one in the world knows.

Apparently a 2019 Toyota Prius v prototype was spotted and photographed, so you might want to wait a little while to see if more details surface before deciding on a 2017.

I am holding out until probably Sept 2018 when we will know for sure if the 2019 Prius v or Rav4 has a lithium battery with at least 50mpg combined and or plugin. My bet is there may be both. In Europe and elsewhere the v is a very popular taxi and Honda has a hybrid CRV in Asia with 50mpg and Kia has one here.
