funny, he talks about the 'old cars with tight engine tolerances' wearing out and burning oil at 150km, but that's just the issue we're discussing here with new cars with loose tolerances.

Harry, our maintenance minder is based on miles. On my Accord, it's based on driving habits, which can extend the change intervals. Your driving route is probably designed for less frequent oil changes, compared to stop and go in more extreme conditions. Oil sent in for analysis have shown that it can often last longer than the manual suggests.

Here's an interesting article from last year: http://www.chicagotribune.com/classified/automotive/sc-changing-oil-autos-0519-20160516-story.html:

Mercedes-Benz, for example, uses full synthetic oil, and some owners have reported that the oil life monitor didn't call for an oil change until 15,000 miles, Calkins said.

I still do 5k with synthetic on the "around town car", and was moving to 7500 on the commuter, "all highway car". I don't know about moving to 15k.......

Oil consumption is a fact of life. Rings don't perfectly seal and you'll get some problems whether it be blow by, oil break down through contamination by gas in the oil, or just oil getting past the rings and being burnt. Id recommend not doing engine breaking as the number one unless you absolutely have to. Past that:
    2010 Prius
    116k miles
10k changes. 0w-20, cheap oem filters.
I put in 5 quarts every change and it ends up at 4 quarts.
That works out to a quart every 10,000 miles which is extremely healthy.
I've owned Honda's that burned a quart ever 300 and still ran like a champ as well and rolled a little coal.
I'm probably gonna bump it up to 12k and send in the oil analysis and see where it gets me at tbn. Keep in mind i run 5 quarts.

I have changed oil at 5k intervals and used Toyota 0W20 oil and filters.

    Joining the survey...

    Gen 3
02/2011 from the documents (the European models don't have the build date printed on the sticker)
    176k km / 110'000 miles
    No oil consumption, but:

I bought it used, and changed the oil with 5w-30 for the summer (it's hot here). It didn't consume any oil about 5k km / 3'000 miles after the change, then the level dropped a bit after about 700 mile highway trip with more than 110*F / 43*C ambient temps. After that, until the oil change at 11k km / 6'800 miles, the level did't drop, but the oil become very dark in the last 6-700miles.

For the cold season (sometimes the winter temps go under -11*F / -24*C) I put 0w-20 and 1200 miles later with 250 miles on the highway, there is no oil consumption at all.
