My dog has been alerting next to the tires of the Prius.

So, I have been putting out snap traps again. In the past three nights -- six caught.

I hate killing them, they are so cute, but their actions in the car are not so cute. Thanks to my dog...

I have screened off all the spots on the car, thanks to instructions on PC. But that does not stop them from random wanders throughout the engine compartment and the interior.

My solution to keep them meeces out of my garage: Mothballs. Drop a few in all the nooks and crannies and places where them little critters run around! (right next to the junction of the floor and the walls) Mothballs and kitty cats! ;)

I've not tried this myself, but I've read some great reviews on "DIY peppermint spray" to repel mice. Sounds easy and cheap. You might try it.

I used to hear ads for Mint-X – Rodent Repellent Trash Bags trash bags all the time in Chicago. The city uses plastic trash cans and has huge problems with rats, mice and raccoons getting into the containers, feeding and breeding. This product seems to help.

I first heard about "mint" repellents from people that have pack rat issues. You can't bait/poison them and they like to get into engine bays and build massive nests. They chew through all the wiring that's in the way in the engine bay. This happened to my Dad's pick-up several years ago over one night when the pickup was left outside. It did $1,800 in damage and the vehicle had to be towed.

Menards sells capsaicin-based animal repellents. I used to use one to keep feral cats away. A neighbor had the nasty habit of feeding them, which also attracted skunks.

If you've ever experienced the aroma of deceased rat, you might reconsider the option of poison where they could sneak away out of reach to die!

That's what's nice about warfarin (Coumadin) rat baits. They eat it and go home to internally bleed to death.

Death by poison is an extremely painful and cruel way to go. A trap is much quicker and more 'humane', at least as far as killing goes. Plus, the poison does not stop with the rodent, but will continue to kill long after the rat's dead, such as the crows that eat the carcass. A newish kind of trap I've tried - with mixed results - is A Rat Zapper that quickly electrocutes the victims. I say 'mixed results', because the rats so far seem too smart to enter the trap, but I have caught several poor little mice that I wasn't really intending to.

True, but they don't always go out of your home/car/property. They may just find somewhere close by where they feel safe when they feel unwell.

The literature, mainly out of University of California at Davis, IIRC, discounts any dire effects on other animals that may eat the dead rodents.

I don't recall the exact details, but the odds of any ill-effects on birds, foxes, etc. that may eat the dead or dying rodents is pretty much nill.

However, the method of death is quite miserable, so, while I did use proper "lock-down" bait stations for a bit, I gave it up.

In my experience the rodents usually crawl out into an open space to die. They are looking for liquid, since the death process tends to dehydrate them.

Rats are extremely smart, and if they only eat a bit of bait and just get a bit sick, they will never eat that sort of bait again. Same in a near-miss with a trap.

If poison bait is not properly secured, it can have significant impacts on native species -- California has had a major problem with marijuana growers just spreading poison bait around grow sites.

Illegal Pot Farms Are Poisoning California’s Forests - The Atlantic

The consumer electric zappers have so-so effectiveness, from the studies I have read.

I use the Victor Tin Cat live traps, which used to work well for me, but now I seem to have meager success, as well as the old-fashion snap traps.

These two methods seem to be the most humane and effective -- with a couple of big cautions.

Live traps must be checked at least daily. I take any caught mice a few miles down the road and let them loose in the forest.

The snap traps are placed after dark around the tires of the cars and then are collected before dawn, otherwise you take the chance of catching birds. Of course, if your car is in an enclosed garage, that is not an issue.

Cayan Pepper spice. Sprinkle around car 3 nights in a row. They will be gone. The spice singes their little nostils.

Moth balls sound like a good idea to try. I kind of feel bad for the moths.

I'll stick with glue traps.....pun almost unintended.

They're not quite as "humane" as the Mk-1, Mod-0 snap trap---still in use after 100 years, but they have the advantage of being cheap, ultra-reliable, easy to deploy and although they will catch insects, they tend not to "catch" birds at least for me.
    And....
If you have a pair of pliers?

    They're reusable! :D

I concur wholeheartedly in strongly advising against poison of any kind, and I'm rather surprised that it is still legal to use, given the threat to wildlife and its potential misuse...both accidental and intentional.

Perhaps I'm just old fashion...but...I could care less about collateral damage using poison to kill rodents. Been there/done that...when our home/garage/vehicles got infested. Other than the smell in the walls for a short period of time and a stray cat that apparently ate one or more of the passing critters...problem was solved fast and effectively.
