Pull video from backup cam

    My dad wants to install a pair of cams in his 2015 and I'm curious if it's possible to pull the video from the factory backup cam. We're looking at dash cams that have a composite input for a second camera. I'm curious if it's possible to tap in to the factory backup cam meaning we wouldn't have to put a second camera on the back of the car and run a wire all the way around.

    I installed a button on the dash of my Gen II to turn on the backup camera at any time so I'm aware of how much of a pain this will be to rip out the head unit.

    I seem to recall reading here that the Rear Television Camera Assembly does produce a composite NTSC video signal. Since it’s Japanese, it might have zero setup—I’ve never looked at the signal on a waveform monitor or oscilloscope. Here are two issues to consider:
    • Multiple termination could be a problem. Video signals are traditionally terminated into a 75 Ω impedance, and if the car’s built-in display and the input connector on the add-on camera both provide this termination, the picture will be too dark. In television studio plants, the usual solution is to buy equipment with high-impedance (loop-though) inputs or to use a distribution amplifier.
    • You may need to provide a continuous six-volt supply for the camera; depending on which version of the radio head unit you have, it may provide power for the camera only when the car is in reverse.
