So I tried searching for this issue on this forum but couldn’t find anything.

I bought a salvaged car and it came like this, so I don’t know when the noise originated. There is a noise that is audible when inside the car as the momentum shifts in any direction. I’m not sure if the noise can be heard from outside the car. It occurs when I’m turning either to the right or left, stopping or accelerating. It does not occur if I take a very wide angle turn or switch lanes or accelerate/decerelate slowly. It’s velocity dependent. It sounds like sand shifting within the car and stops at a certain point, even if I’m still turning. It seems like whatever has shifted has reached the end, the noise stops. I’ve checked under the rear seats and in the cargo compartment and under that in the trunk as well and didn’t find any sand or other objects that could be making that noise.

Anyone else experience this before or know what could be causing this? Thanks!

Welcome to the forum! How many miles on the car and why was it scrapped?

Might be front bearing(s). I've had two RFs done and recently a LF too but am in a winter salt area with terrible roads.

Is it possible you post a video of the noise, since its also can be simulates by you.

It may be left-over seed shells and nut shells if the car had had mice in it in the past. They are notorious for doing that in a Prius when it has sat in one place for long periods of time (like in a salvage yard.)

It has ~108k. Front passenger collision. It tore a piece of the hood up, cracked the bumper, decent sized dent in the fender and mild scratch all the way down the passenger side of the car down to the quater panel.

Could the wheel bearings be causing a noise like that?

And what does RF and LF mean?

I can upload a video later tonight.

It sounds too smooth to be nut and sheep seeds. Almost identical to shaking an etch a sketch, very fine sounding and uniform.

I looked in the spare tire well, nothing there. After hearing it again, I wouldn’t completely rule out the nut and seed theory, but where would they be hidden?

I recorded the sound on my phone, how do I upload it?

There is also a clunking noise when I brake, only when below 5 mph. It doesn’t happen above 5 mph at all. I saw this on another thread but they said that it didn’t happen to them in neutral. Mine sill occurs in neutral. Then it makes a more subtle clunking noise if I’m still with the brake depressed.

This clunking noise also occurs in my other 2008 Prius that I got from the auction, ~125k, but not as loud as my 2007. Could both these sounds be caused by the suspension?

Possible suspects in my mind are: wheel bearings, CV joints, shocks, swaybar bushings, or something else in the suspension (e.g. loose bolt)

I had water trapped in the tray under the wipers. There is a drain about 4 inches in from the corners.
The passenger side is behind the VIN pannel.

Not too familiar. I took it to a suspension guy, said he never heard the sound before. I’ve looked at the tray under the wipers, that’s clear of debris. The car never came with any broken glass.

Well, no, but it did get hit pretty hard in an area that could easily have broken the front passenger window and it was replaced before you got it. It's pretty hard to get debris out of the bottom of the inside of a door.

Both my gen 2+3 needed front wheel bearing at 40,000, but wheel bearings are obvious noises, loud at 40,louder at 60
The gen2 needed a steering wrack at 60,000, I suspect you need a steering wrack, go to a good alignment shop and let them inspect.

Err, did you recently change or move the front wheels around and not tighten the lugs properly, that would make a weird noise, and you would rather lurch around rather than turn;)
