Another reason I like google maps....I just talk/type where I want to go and it usually finds the location instantly...no post codes, etc...required. It also remembers where you have been and locations you have 'starred' and will search those first.

That's the Garmin nuvii 3490LMT, exactly (no zip/postal code), and if you get a phone call in the moving car and need to input a new address, you can do so while on the call using the Garmin's excellent voice recognition. It too automatically remembers your previous destinations which appear on a chronological list when you ask for "Recent". Yes, I stop and park safely, unless I have a passenger to help!

I also have a hard time with the VR. It rarely understands me. And I’m in St Paul - this high tech car should know that when I say Grand Avenue it should assume St Paul Minnesota. I usually resort to having Siri get me to my destination. She’s a lot smarter even though her screen is a lot smaller.

The VR button I am referring to is the one which turns on the voice capabilities on the lower left side of the steering wheel

I see your point. It is a good system. However, I really like the 'one device for everything' aspect of a smartphone.

I also have a magnetic mount that actually looks great in the car. The magnetic mounts really work great and don't look out of place at all.

By the way, has anyone tried any of the Garmin smartphone apps? I currently have Navigon and CoPilot on the phone as backup GPS apps. Navigon is currently my preferred non-google-maps offline GPS app.

Maybe google maps will team up with some satnav?

The new Garmins have models that couple up with phone data! They're in the $300 range.

I'm thinking of something that avoids using cellular data, just uses satellite, but uses Google Map, which seems the leader for intuitive/intelligent maps. Yeah but maybe a moot point with ubiquitous cell towers and higher data caps.

Gotcha, that what I call the "Call" button!
I thought that might be what you had in mind, but I'm still working on the timing of when/how to hit it. It's still a bit of a PITA, but I'll keep trying. The GPS still has my previously-mentioned limitations as do all "Built-ins", as well as the spotty destination results... Also, what happens when you receive a call on your linked cellphone; the Lexus we had would overlay the phone info, thereby hiding the map! It's probably what happens here. I'm constantly on the phone while driving, as I am called by my IT, etc. customers.

Use the Google Maps "offline cache." Download the map region so it can use it without a data connection. Turn off the traffic and it wil not use anything data related.

Yep! Just refresh the offline maps every 30 days for changes. It will remind you.

    It was me. :D

We used downloaded/cached google maps for our entire road trip this year.

    https://drive.google.com/open?id=1xHF9v2dpDqkYzE939LNQDA07UR0&usp=sharing

Worked great! The only downside is that we had to download quite a few sections since each map section maxes out at a fixed size.

Once downloaded, you can manually refresh just before the trip...or it will remind you every 30 days or so ( as mentioned above ).

    Try this:
Press the voice button twice. When it beeps say ADDRESS. You will then hear another beep. When you see the word ADDRESS on the screen, press the voice button again. Now say the address you are looking for, then wait for the beep AND for it to appear on the screen. When you see it, press the voice button again and say YES, and you are done.

It takes me less than 13 seconds to do the above, comparable to your Garmin.

    Couple of things...

    1. Pressing the voice button will make the voice prompts stop and will advance to the next prompt or suspend the activity. For example, if you press the voice button TWICE and then say TUNE TO 101.5 FM, you can then press the voice button again once you see the station displayed on the screen. That will tune to the channel and eliminate the voice response...much faster.
    2. Do not use zip codes when speaking your address.

Besides all the button pushing (it's a lot of PRESSURE for an old man!), my Advanced GPS, after following your instructions 5 times says the following: "multiple streets found", I then have to "write the novel", through all the components of the destination! Frustrating! Must be the "street density" of my area which causes it to be confused. It doesn't happen with my old Garmin.

    .
In addition, if my phone is being used, the map is overlaid with the phone call info.

Them are dang good, but they've really jacked up the price: $1.59/can; used to be $0.99/can. The oil is great though, and I hear, that unlike the imported olive oils, the California Extra Virgin is unadulterated and not too expensive. That's California EV Prime to you guys!

    I need 3 systems

Garmin for up-to-date maps, and navigation. The garmin 2798 is my choice. It also moves from vehicle to vehicle very easy. Set to vehicle forward view, zoomed in, for assisting in turns.

Cell phone for Waze - need to know accurate and timely traffic information. It has good voice alerts. When your in dead stop traffic, you can find out the actual cause of the jam-up.

Prius GPS for positional. Always north facing, zoomed out. A handy way see my actual direction, easy to notice which state I'm currently in. and all the surrounding cities towns..

Voice nav turned off. I listen to books on tape, and ever so often, one of the narrations will tell my car where to go.
