Fix and Keep or Fix and Sell?

This year has been full of repairs for my 2005 Prius. First, it had multiple A/C problem in January (Compressor exploded, which broke other things). The fix was $3000. Then, in May, the HV battery died, a $2500. Two weeks later, the battery died again. No big deal as it was a free fix and the reconditioned battery was probably defective. The day after Black Friday last month, on my birthday, the A/C only blew burning hot air and it was 90 degrees outside. My first A/C problem happened on my birthday, too, last year. Weird...

This 2nd A/C fix was $650 only for labor as the compressor was still under warranty. On the bright side, I got a 2017 Corolla SE 50th Anniversary Edition as a free loaner car for two weeks. Now, I've payed over $6000 this year alone for this car.

It still does not end there! After two only 2 days of having the car back from the dealer, the A/C is blowing warm air again! I'm going to force them to fix this for free as it is entirely their fault. This Prius has still never left me stranded in the 250k miles I put on it. I think 250k miles is the magic number so I'm planning on selling it.

I'll be getting 41 MPG on the freeway with this Mazda, so that's good. It's also fun to drive, unlike my 2005 Prius, and it is reliable.

The first thing my dealer said after I got the car was to sell it, and I was thinking the same thing. Plus, the car is old and falling apart. I would be happy if I got $2k for it. Should I sell it? A/C is a necessity where I live and the car hates me. It's only going to go downhill if I keep it, but I really like this car and I enjoy not having a car payment unlike my 2016 Prius.

 

My favorite local independent shop installed the refurbished battery. They don't specialize in hybrids, but have worked with Prius batteries before and gave me a 2 or 3 year warranty I believe. Thanks for the input! I feel like the engine will be the next thing to go, and I don't have a warranty for that. Every time I accelerate and hear the engine, I hear an engine with 250k miles and it sounds pretty harsh. That Mazda I was looking at was just sold to someone else, so I'm going to wait until I find a good deal on one. Good luck with your 251k mile Prius.How much did you buy your 251k mile Prius for and is everything working on it? Good condition? I just wanted a get a glimpse of what I could get for my car.

I didn't ask the dealer if the inverter pump is working, but I will when I get it back today or tomorrow. They already found a fix and it is $300. Let's hope it works this time or I'm not paying for this repair. I appreciate the info because that is what my A/C was doing, getting warm after about 15 minutes.
