Yet another battery thread!

    Hi team!

    Hope you're all well, I had a look at the live data from my Torque app with a cheapo ELM327 Bluetooth reader. These are the results:

    This is with the car in 'READY' mode just before driving. What do you guys make of those wacky minus voltages?

    I don't use the Torque app so I have no advice other than I would verify with another reader to eliminate your current setup. If you still get those same wacky numbers, I would think about cleaning wiring connections within the battery (still original?) and the battery ECU (both within the case). Rusty or loose pins in the connectors, etc. Do you currently have trouble codes/lights?

    Hi @fotomoto thanks for the quick reply. I have the 'red triangle of death' and red car and battery icons on the MFD with exclamation marks on them. I also have ABS, VSC, and yellow exclamation circle! (definitely christmas right??) I'm waiting for my VCI cable to arrive then I'll attempt to scan the codes and post them on here.

    I think you should not try to make too much of them.......and just accept that with a 13 year old vehicle, you probably have 4 banks bad.
    The specific numbers are likely not important and the ones you show certainly are not accurate.

    @Sam Spade I completely agree. To be fair it drives absolutely fine and it never failed to start so I'm not too worried. I got it at a bargain price so I'm treating it as a long term project. And even if I don't get everything fixed I'll just drive until the wheels fall off!(y)

    Ahh, OK. Well then we've probably moved to another place: failed HV battery; especially f it's the original. But yup gonna' need the codes. Torque Pro app should be to see them but, again, I don't use it (use techstream) so maybe others can help you there.

    I've come to find that having VFR in one's name typically means they have an interest in either aviation or a particular Honda motorcycle model line (the greatest bike evah!). :)

    Looks like there are some connection issues.

    When you do a scan for error codes what comes up?

    I would definitely open up that pack and do some visual inspection. Post some pics, it would be interesting to see.

    @fotomoto I have no particular interest in aviation! so that could only mean one thing;) Yes the viffer is my 'emergency ride' should the Prius fail me:LOL: @ericbecky as soon as the cable arrives I'll scan the codes and post them on here. If I need to venture into the hybrid battery compartment I'll post some pics on here as well. Stand by!

    Hi team,

    So I got some codes:

    P0A08 - DC/DC Converter Status Circuit
    P0A09 - DC/DC Converter Status Circuit Low Input

    I couldn't get the ABS/Brake codes, computer said no, no idea why.

    I am ha ing some of the same problems with 05 prius. Just replaced the 2 bad cells that I had today. After replacing took for a drive charged right up to green. Came home for about an hour or so and left for town. After about 5 miles all lights came on again. Death triangle, CVS, yellow question mark and check engine. Came home unhooked battery for about 15 minutes. Hooked back up no lights felt inverter pump seemed to be working took for a drive about 5 or 6 miles. As soon. As I pulled in driveway lights came back on. Totally stressed.

    You need to have a way to see the hv battery voltage data live.

    That way you can plan a course of action.
    Otherwise you are simply guessing, which can be quite stressful.

    Android phone with Torque Pro app. Using a Bluetooth OBDII adapter. Cost you less than $60 if you by the best adapter.

    @Brent meyer Eric is absolutely right, initially I used torque pro (the paid version was only about £2.99 or something) worth it in my opinion. Torque pro comes pre-loaded with custom PIDs for Prius so all you have to do is create a profile then load the custom PIDs from the menu. May also be worth checking the connections from the inverter that go to the battery. These can suffer from corrosion/poor connection in older cars. I know my '04 has loads of verdigris in the main fuse box which I plan to tackle with some contact cleaner and a nylon brush, I would imagine it's more of the same in my battery compartment.
