Assisted steering

    The assisted steering doesn't seem to be working on my 2017 Prius. When I turn on lane warning, the screen says it's on, but I've tested it a couple of times and I get warning beeps but the car keeps drifting.

    I see 3 possibilities: 1. I need to get service, 2. I need to turn on something I've missed, or 3. It doesn't do what I thought it did.

    Anyone know which?

    The steering input is very faint. It feels more like a slight resistance rather than corrective steering.

    I found the effect is best observed at highway speeds using finger tips to hold the steering. In one hands-off, shallow, drift test to the left, the correction was aggressive enough to send the car drifting a bit faster to the right. In an advanced lane following system, it would correct as the center was approached.

    Too weak for me to feel. I may have felt it once. That's just the nature of the beast.

    The LDA feature sucks on this car. I have the same problem. LDA doesn't work reliability either.

    Seems like page 386 says the LDA Steering Assist Mode needs to be turned on in the Settings screen - in addition to pressing the LDA button?

    Also Huskers might be confused with the sensitivity of LDA (which he thinks is the strength of the assist). To my knowledge, the strength is not adjustable but the sensitivity of LDA's reaction is (And that's independent of whether LDA thinks you need a nudge back or just the warning).

    LDA is simply a passive (or semi-active at best) design. It's just meant to warn you and occasionally it might nudge you back but it is not LKA (Lane Keep Assist) like the Gen 3 or like Honda Sensing (Honda calls it LKAS) where it actively keeps you centred in the lane.

    Toyota keeps LKA in a select Lexus models with Lexus Safety Sense+ but it seems most Toyota and Lexus models with the upscale "Safety Sense" package only have LDA.

    Toyota is working on Lane Trace Assist (LTA) that debuted on the 2018 LS500/LS500h. It will make its way to select Toyota models with TSS-P for 2019 model year (Lexus Safety Sense + A). LTA builds on LDA and will help guide the car around corners (trace the lane as it were).

    My guess for not including LKA was the feedback from owners that it felt intrusive (like an invisible hand is constantly tugging on the steering wheel). Perhaps that was because the Gen 3's LKA wasn't sophisticated enough? I haven't tried Honda's LKAS to see if it's improved over the Toyota version.

    But anyway, LTA should help bring back some of the functionality of LKA. LTA requires DRCC to be active (just like LKA)
