Newbie here....it seems there isn't consensus about whether a license plate number is needed on the application or not. I've seen people successful w/o, but also those turned back w/o. Any official news on this? Thanks

Bought the car 5/31/2006 :) :) - Paid MSRP plus $195 for Sirius Radio and Wheel Locks.

Sent the application for stickers on 6/5/2006....intentionally waited a few days before sending the application to decrease the chance of it being returned.

Plates arrived on 6/19/2006, plus or minus a few days.

    Check cashed on 6/21/2006

Got my HOV stickers last Saturday, 6/24/2006. The number on the stickers is HE0642XX. :)

Per phone convo with DMV, they say plate # is required, but it's also likely that if your car is in the system when the app gets there, they "might" let it slide. Official policy is you need plate #. I think if the VIN# turns up empty in DMV computer, you'll get the app back.

I applied for my dmv stickers and after 2 mo. my check hadn't cleared... I contacted dmv and they told me to resubmit my application (along with another $8). No problem. A few weeks later I received my stickers 59xxx. Then, a week later I received ANOTHER set of stickers (with a different serial number). Anybody know if I can transfer (sell) the 2nd set of stickers? Thanks.

I had a similar problem -- in my case though, I found out that my dealer had mucked up my car registration so they were sent somewhere else!

Some background: I was able to get through to the special processing unit -- the person that helped me was very helpful. Basically, once the four weeks have passed since the check cleared, you can request that they initiate an e-mail escalation to the group issuing the stickers. (The folks that answer the phones for the special processing unit don't actually do the sticker issuance.) The e-mail escalation service level agreement is three business days -- they are very good about following-up and will contact you.

The representative that called me was most helpful, explained to me what had happened, and got it all cleared up. I would suggest you call and request and escalation so you can get this all sorted out.

I already have a set of stickers on my car. The question is, can I transfer (sell) the 2nd set of stickers which were issued to me? The 2nd set of stickers have a different serial number...

I have no official knowledge, but I would be willing to bet that both you and purchaser would get into deep doodoo if you tried this--stickers are assigned based on VIN and plate #, and only to "qualified" vehicles." Both sets should have come with a card that states the VIN and license # to which they were assigned. So, say you sell your stickers on, I do not know, Ebay, and someone sticks 'em on a, oh, say a Hummer. Some Chippie's having a slow day and happens to spot said Hummer tooling along with one grunt inside. Chippie stops Hummer, looks up # on stickers and, lo and behold, who do they find, but BHM...I'd recommend calling DMV and asking which ones are really yours and which ones they would like returned to them or shredded...but that's just little ol' paranoid me...OTOH, you could enjoy living dangerously and reckoning that the chippies ain't gonna give a flyin' f**k anyway, which is the most likely outcome...Up to you--Do you feel lucky?

Um, never mind. I'm asking the same question about whether I need the plates before I can submit the app. Doh!

I took someone's advice in another thread and sent in a copy of my temporary registration with the application... Still no plates, but the DMV cashed my $8 check yesterday, so hopefully they'll come through!

My dealer also did the "electronic application"... and I called a few days later to make sure they did the papers - dealers have quite a bit of leeway in how long they take, a few weeks IIRC.

My guess is that when the DMV gets the app, they run the VIN. If it's in the system, they'll issue the stickers. I see probably about 5 or 6 non-plated Prii with the stickers here in OC.

I could be full of it, but I'll update if/when I get my stickers. At this late juncture, I wouldn't hold out for plates before sending in an app. You can always call to update (someone on here said they actually got through to the "Special Processing Unit") or just send a 2nd app.

Take that as a very encouraging sign. I do not recall reading about anyone whose check was deposited by the DMV who did not receive stickers within a week or so.

    Bought car on 6/16/06
    Sent in application 6/27/06
    DMV received application 7/3/06
DMV sent back application telling me to resubmit when I get license plate # 7/14/06

FYI, I did include a copy of my temporary registration with my application. Not sure what to do now--should I wait a couple more days to see if I get my plates and if not resend a whole new application???

Anyone know if the DMV will replace your HOV stickers if one's car is totalled? Will they do it even after the 75,000 quota is met?

Just wait until the plates come and re-submit with the plate number filled in. No registration need be sent to them. Then wait about a month.

    Here's my story:

6/17 bought car, dealer used "electronic DMV filing"
6/23 sent application (no plate #)
6/26 app delivery confirmed via USPS.com
    7/10 check cashed
    7/15 stickers arrived (#HE0667xx)

I still have no plate, but the plate # is on the certificate that comes with the stickers... This leads me to believe my earlier theory is true: if the VIN is in the DMV computers when they get the app, they'll issue your stickers, even if you don't put a plate # on your app. My guess is the people who are getting it bounced back to them had lazy dealers who were tardy in submitting the DMV paperwork.

Not too shabby overall... 4 weeks to the day between car purchase and stickers in-hand.

Also, I noticed above that the poster who got stickers on 6/24 had #642xx, I have #667xx... That's about 2500 stickers in 3 weeks... our checks were each cashed just a few days before as well...

So... let's do a little nerdy over-obsessive math:
2500 stickers / 15 working days = ~165 stickers processed per day (more than prior estimates). Assume they will allot maybe 5-7% for replacement/other stickers, so we'll be generous and call the total issued estimate 80,000 stickers. If you take that they processed my stickers (#667xx) on 7/10, that leaves 13,000 left. Take the 165/day estimate above and you get 13,000/165 = 78 processing days left, divided by 5 gives us 15 weeks left.

Judging by most posts and my own experience, processing time is about 2 weeks, that leaves us with the final stickers issued on about 10/28, from applications received before 10/14. My guess is that there will also be a push from current Prius owners that haven't sent for stickers but now that they are running out will do so... I bet end of September is where they run out.

I'll add my experience to the thread.

6/27 bought car, dealer used electronic filing and I got plates immediately from the dealer (owner is a family friend)
6/28 mailed application with personal check
    7/12 check cashed
    7/14 stickers arrived (HE0666XX)

Interestingly, my check was cashed two days after SCDrJ's, but my sticker number was lower.

    Howdy -
Something in the above post, caught my eye. "...ain't nothin' gonna get me to keep the transponder anywhere other than the glovebox..."

Are you saying that when you go through the toll plazas, the ETC can find your transponder? They recommend placing them inside your windshield. so I believed them. If I left mine in the glovebox, & the ETC couldn't find mine - - my wife would never let hear the end of it!!

My experience was similar to yours.

6/12 Bought and picked up car
    6/15 Paid for car
6/22 Received plates from dealer (non-electronic registration)
6/27 Picked up transponder and evidence of Fastrak acct (required for Bay Area residents)
6/28 Mailed in sticker application to DMV
    7/10 $8 check cleared bank
7/11 Stickers issued by DMV (date on certificate)
7/12 Stickers mailed out by DMV (date on envelope)
    7/17 Stickers received (HE0668**)

Interesting that my sticker # is about 200 higher than yours and 100 higher than SCDrJ's, even though my check was "cashed" before yours and at the same time as SCDrJ's. Given that, I don't think the stickers are necessarily being issued consecutively and any estimate of the issue rate based on that assumption may be faulty. In any event, it apparently made no difference that it was a personal check (not a cashier's check or money order). Now I have to decide whether to put the butt ugly stickers on the car or not. ;)

UPDATE: Called DMV at the 1-800 # and they had my license plate number in the system, but wouldn't give it to me over the phone because they couldn't "verify who I was..." Going to go into a local DMV office to get the number, but apparently the plates have been mailed or they are getting ready to be mailed. That means it took about 1 month for the plates to be issued. I'm in OC.

I purchased a 2006 Prius on May 6th 2006 and applied for the CA HOV sticker upon receiving the license plates and received the HOV sticker in late June (don't remember the exact date). I hear there are about 5000 left or so.

No...Although I think it CAN be read there--seems to have happened in one or another of our cars. No, I just pull it out only when I need it, then toss it back in. There's enough visual busy-ness going on with the Pri that I don't need clutter.
