Has anyone tried out the new Sanyo Katana phone with the Prius? I'm not particularly interested in lots of "bells and whistles" on a phone. Reliable connection and operation with the features of my 2005 Prius bluetooth system, good sound, and good battery life are my priorities.

It's not out yet. As soon as a Sprint store in the Los Angeles area gets one I'll know about it and I'm gonna test it. Should be any day now. But I haven't seen an actual shipment in transit yet.

I do have a dummy model..... It's allright build quality. I was expecting alot more from Sanyo.

Took a chance yesterday and upgraded to the Katana. With 24 hours of use under my belt  I can report the following:
    • phone paired easily with my 2005 Prius
    • battery and signal strength appears in MFD
    • I transfered my entire contact list successfully in one step
    • incoming and outgoing calls can be completed using the buttons on the steering wheel
I know that it's early in the game, but so far I'm happy with the phone and with my Sprint service.
So far, so good!! Now, if the battery life is better than it was with my SE T608 I'll be a happy camper.

Poop. I wanted to be the one who told everyone about the full OBEX on the phone.

No intent to steal your thunder!! I'll be traveling for the next couple of weeks and I was slightly desperate to acquire a better phone. I was not expecting such a good result, hence my excitement to post!!
I am still looking forward to your complete report and I'm sure I speak for others as well. :)

New to the board, and have owned my Prius for only a week. As a Sprint PCS subscriber, I had been doing research for the most compatible phone with little hope of finding one that would allow a majority of the features to work. Everything I'd read until this past week left me thinking I might have to settle for something less than perfect.

About a week before my car arrived, I read about the Katana, and based on the limited knowledge I'd picked up about bluetooth during my research, it seemed like it might be a good option. I couldn't be sure though, since this was the ONLY post I was able to find online that mentioned it.

I had been to the Sprint site several times and nearly bought it as I was fairly certain it would be the answer, but it wasn't until I saw the post from scilady that I went back and put in the order. It arrived this afternoon, and from everything I've tried so far, works absolutely flawlessly with every function when paired with the Prius. I am not a "power user" so a PDA (treo) was really too much, and even a camera is going beyond my needs, but from everything I've read over the past couple of months, this phone is at least as compatible if not more compatible with the Prius bluetooth than any other phone on the market.

Thanks scilady for taking the step for us all, and letting us know it was the answer we've been looking for!

Glad to see positive results with this phone. I still have yet to see one myself.

Can anyone comment on whether or not the incoming call number displays on the MFD while stopped? If so, does it show a 1 before the area code or not?

I've been fooling with it and so far it seems to be a really good phone. It feels cheep, but it's holding up well. Big shocker for me.

If you receive a call while stopped, the incoming number is displayed with no numeral 1. I'm curious what difference the 1 makes, could you elaborate? Also, when moving, the full name from your contact list is displayed if the number is in your contact list, otherwise I think it simply said incoming call, but don't quote me on that.

I've also had success with moving to and from the car during a call. the calls have transferred from and to the handset seamlessly. I think the only thing I haven't tried to this point as far as the bluetooth integration is call waiting. I don't use the cell phone for business, so the number of calls I receive are limited, and the situation just hasn't come up.

Unlike a previous post, I don't think the phone feels cheap at all. There's no creaking to the case when handling it, everything seems fairly solid in my opinion. In the past I've primarily used Nokia, Samsung, LG and one Motorola, and I'd say build quality of the Sanyo is at least on par with all of the above.

I can't offer anything on the rest of the phone's features, such as camera, web surfing or anything that it does outside of being a phone, but if someone with a Toyota/Lexus Bluetooth equipped car is looking for something that does everything a "phone" should do, I'd recommend the Katana with no hesitation or reservations.

No real difference on whether or not it shows the 1 or not unless you already have contacts in your car from another phone. My wife's phone (Samsung a920) passes the 1 while mine does not (LG LX350) - or the other way around. So saved contacts don't come up while using her phone since I saved them to work with my phone. Really, the important thing is the phone passes the number to the car.

Leaving the car while on a call works fine for me. But coming back to the car on a call, my phone doesn't give me the option to transfer to BT after the MFD says BT connected. So I have to hang up and call back. Then I have the BT transfer option. Maybe this is just my phone (again LG LX350).

That's a protocol issue. The katana doesn't suffer from this.

I'm starting to really be pleased with this phone. It's very low end, but the quality is really good. I have only heard of a few defective units. Perhaps they got smart and decided to block the phone's abilities on the software side instead of crippling the bluetooth? This would make sense.
