...but even there, isn't there stuff that's constantly popping into and out of existence?

Vacuum 'cleaners' Dyson or otherwise, make a lot of noise and a lot of spinning but don't 'draw down' all that much. Goal is 'flow' not 'low' Does that make sense? Probably typically 10^18.

into and out of existence? That's how the story goes. Actually all the best equations say so, and there have been some physical detentions of the poppings.

It is an domain where physical intuition is worth nothing to an excellent approximation.

The explanation makes sense when it comes to vacuum cleaners.

However, the Dyson we had, and which we took back to the shop because it was hopeless, was a pretty steady 10^19. On a good day.

The goal for Dyson, it appears, was neither "low" nor "flow", but "cashflow".

Never heard anything about 8, but there are alternate pronunciations for 四 (the numeral 4) & 七 (the numeral 7).

    一 ichi 1
    二 ni 2
    三 san 3
四 shi or yon 4 <-Shi sounds like the word for death
    五 go 5
    六 roku 6
    七 shichi or nana 7 <- same as 4
    八 hachi 8
    九 ku 9
    十 jyu 10

I don't know anything about fortune-telling other than the fortunes you can buy at shrines/temples, and the various kinds of talismans sold there. Superstitions abound, and I'm willing to accept help from kamisama. The fox gods of Fushimi temples are said to be particularly helpful with traffic safety, including network traffic...

When the Lexus LFa was built, Toyota returned to its weaving heritage and built special looms so they could fabricate carbon fiber parts.

The same goes for most Chinese dialects. 4 is by far the unluckiest number. Most buildings won't have a 4th, 14th, 24th (etc) floor.

This doesn't happen in Chinese, though.

We Librans don't believe in such fortune-telling nonsense.

    ....but I'm sure this works...

Yeah I watched youkus. The ads differed but the drops were the same.

According to narrator, 'vacuum' achieved was 2*10^12 molecules per cm^3 which is impressive for such a large volume. Yeah I did the math.

Yes, they're just coming up as big blanks for me, even though I'm the one who pasted them in. It's a link to the Youku version of the same clip as the YouTube one, so you're not missing anything apart from some Chinese adverts at the start.

I'm glad you're seeing it, at least, since you're the one who needs the alternative link.

The bowling-ball / feathers thing is kind of cool.

And yes, for such a huge space, it's a very impressive level of vacuum.

First time I saw a turbomolecular pump I said "Wow what does it do?" Answer: "Nothing, mostly".

    Nerd humor.

Oh, I knew what would happen. It was just nice to watch: much of what's in Prof Coxy's programmes is beautifully filmed.
