I hope my 2012 plugin lasts 200, 000 miles but I'm having doubts. At 54,000 miles the traction battery only gives me 6.7 miles and that is going down slowly by the month. That still gets me to the shopping center and back but only with about 1.5 miles left. Anyplace else I turn on the engine manually hoping to keep the battery from wearing down further. When I get to 5 miles left, I'm going to stop charging altogether. Can anyone direct me to where I can get information about replacing the lithium battery or rebuilding it?

How much of that is related to ambient (outside) temperature? I know you are in Orlando, so you don't experience the same kind of cold the rest of us get, but if you were looking at your range this morning (when it is close to freezing down there, according to my weather map), you would have probably seen 20% less than on a normal day.

If I keep my Energi long term, this is what I'm thinking about doing. I'll call it a "super hybrid".

Used plug-in batteries are reeeeeeeal cheap right now. I found several for the Volt (huge 16kwh battery) for less than $1,000. Heck, used gen 2 prius batteries cost more than that! Supply and demand.

Here's the rub: most folks don't have the means to properly store a spare LiOn battery for months or years while waiting for their original to crap out. Hopefully a nice repair/rebuild cottage industry will develop just like it did for NiMh chemistries.

My 2012 with 60k still gives about 8 miles (without A/C turned on), and I live in a hilly area with cold winters and drive on high-speed roads always fully discharging. That would seem to be worst case, but your range is even less in a warm area with few hills. Do you have an extended warranty through which you can try to claim a defective battery?

have you owned it since new?

without more info, we can't help you, except to say no one has ever had to replace a pip battery.
except maybe one case when the car wouldn't go at all and dealer put a new one in under warranty.

I'm showing about 10.5 miles predicted EV range on my 2013. It was 29° when I left for work this morning. It's a pretty demanding commute, too. Speed limits of 45-60 with lots and lots of stops, many too sudden to regenerate.

Can the dealership do "hybrid health check"* on the PIP battery? I think they charge around $100 for this? At least then you're not in the dark regarding battery status.

    * Google "Toyota hybrid health check" for more info. Toyota UK is promoting this, but it must be possible for North American dealerships to perform this too?

My mileage went up to 7.7 this cold morning but I suspect that's due AC turned off. I'll look for used batteries but like you said- how to store? I'll check the warranty. It's cold for Orlando. Glad to know there are no reports of bad PIP batteries, explains the lack of replacement info. I can accept a "super hybrid" especially with today's gas prices as long as it keeps going. Finally thanks for the links to related threads and thanks for all the responses (I didn't expect so many). Good luck with all your Prius's.

Seems about right for that kind of operational temperature. The EV range on that PiP always drops in winter. I’m of course assuming that’s 32 degrees Fahrenheit

Was that the Fahrenheit or Celsius scale?

The range estimation for me always drops by about a mile in winter, even though the effective range that I can drive in EV mode doesn't seem to change so much. I'm in a very temperate climate though, rarely goes below freezing in winter and summer averages are about 15C/60F. I've never heard the battery fans go on while driving (only when charging).

I also lost significant range when one of the rear brake caliper slide pins seized - so if your rear brakes are making noise or wearing unevenly, be sure to check them out ASAP.

So I had to go to the dealer for a recall and I asked for a quote to replace the battery. $11,200 after installation and taxes. That's equal to the current trade in value. I guess I'll keep driving it until it won't make it out of the driveway. Hope that's a long time from now. Just FYI.

    LOL. Stealers.....

A quick search on flea-bay, shows numerous used PIP batts ranging in price (with shipping) from $1200-2500 so you have options. Now the question becomes, how long can this LiOn chemistry sit without maintenance? By the time willyag and other PIP owners actually need or want a used replacement, will these still be good?
