I just installed the harness and started the first phase of the prolong reconditioning process. But from the get go it says I've got 228v. Am I reading this correctly? Does this mean my battery is fine since normal operating range is 202-235v for gen2?

What you are seeing is normal;).

Continue to charge until it reaches ~240 volts. Let it sit at 240 for 4-6 hours then begin discharging :).

Good luck and let us know if you have any additional questions (y).

I think that only means you battery is likely not beyond hope.IF the past experience of others holds true, you will see improvement after the reconditioning process, especially if you are able to do the full 3 cycles.
You MUST let it rest after the last one before driving though. @jerrymildred got impatient and found out the hard way.
Thank you, Jerry for being an example. :D

From the get go is where the charg3 in the battery is at the time you started. The charge level you see on th3 mfd does not even come close to the actual charge level on the battery. The normal voltage level you will see after it’s been charging for 15 hours will be around 241 to 244
Takes hours and hours at a charge rate of .338. That’s a1/3 of an amp charge rate.
Very mild so as not to cause any heat in the modules. The most important thing is to keep the battery cool that’s why there system forces the battery fan to run at max speed thru the whole operation.

Very hot modules: cracked module cases

When did you start and what is your plan;).

We’re you experiencing any battery issues prior to getting the Prolong equipment ?

Your welcome. Don’t know if your doing a discharge but I would wait on that. Get familiar with the charge process and see how the car does with a full charge. I charged my car many timesb over a year before I did a discharge. I got good results with just a charge for quite a while,

In the meantime do a lot of reading here theres a lot of very smart battery guys on this forum.

    I started at 1:30pm today (1/20/18).

My fuel economy had been going down hill very slowly since the summer, and the hybrid battery monitor was overcharging. Recently, it has been undercharged with MPG in the mid to high 20s!

Are you planning just a single "top up" charge first to see what improves or a charge-discharge-charge reconditioning cycle?

Thanks, I will certainly test it out before a discharge. I was going to do the whole process but I am actually in a bit of family emergency pinch and need to drive 6 hours as soon as possible. Should be a good test unless anyone recommends against that.

I have done a lot of looking around on here-- it's how I found out about prolong. Sometimes it's overwhelming but I am super impressed and grateful for the forum and all of the shared knowledge.

You can get some improvement with just a single charge but I believe you still need to let it rest to cool down some before driving it. Recommended rest time is 30 minutes to an hour.

Good. That will let you deal with the family emergency. It is never good to rush these this process.

    You are welcome!
I just remember reading that, a few years ago, @jerrymildred knew he should wait but got impatient. He ended up needing to replace his battery. Fortunately he found a good used one. That is why the warning.

oh, I will take whatever info and advice and well wishes I can get! I've done a lot of mechanicary but nothing like this. It's all foreign and there are so many potential ways to mess up $big$ time. So thanks!

Ok, so...I waited for an hour after charging and took her for a spin. 7 miles on a 55mph hwy and some rather short (and hilly) round town driving. On the hwy I averaged 36 mpg. In town, 33 by the end of it but that was at the end of a long downhill and short drive. Thoughts?

I kind of want to give the whole picture of Prius' current state. Here goes. I will include anything I think might be relevant which does not mean that it is!

Before this summer I averaged 44-46mpg most all of the time, hwy and city.

While driving down the interstate a contractor bag got sucked under my car and was stuck on something burning. I pulled it off but for the next many months I would smell burning plastic after driving, not always, but frequently enough.

A few months later, driving down the interstate and the heat shield to my catalytic converter (I think that's what it was) came off. By this time my fuel economy had dropped a couple of mpg.

I live in Pittsburgh, a very hilly city, and I started noticing the hybrid battery discharging at a stop light at the bottom of a steep hill. It was a new sound for me. And it was new for me to see the hybrid battery full on green.

I got studded snow tires. Didn't notice much impact on fuel economy.

For christmas I drove from Pittsburgh to Vermont. We had that terrible cold snap and it got down into the negative teens. I actually had to go the hospital in the middle of one of those nights while it was -9F. When I turned on the car, the dash lights didn't come on. Then I turned the car off and back on, dash lights. But a bunch stayed on. VSC, tire pressure, brake, maintenance required. And there was no beeb when I backed up. Same happened when I left the hospital at -7F.

Since then the lights have never gone off. I've tried an OBD II and there are no codes. No codes showed up at a valvoline when I got an oil change. I ordered a VCI techstream but never got past the registration key frustration (If anyone has any info, please help! I've tried opening the file to find the key but that is not working).

On the drive back from VT I noticed my fuel economy was massively worse. I was getting in the mid to low 30's. Now, just under a month later, I've gotten down to 24mpg in the city. I haven't been on the hwy. And noticed that the monitor shows the hybrid battery is only half charged.

That's all I can think of. Perhaps not relevant or helpful. Maybe I need to do the full discharge, recharge cycle.

Any help, tips, advice, encouragement, greatly appreciated!

Sounds like an interesting recent history.

How was the state of charge indicator on the display during your drive tonight?

A 7 mile drive will not be a good indication of the process, particularly in cold conditions.

Your battery was going out and performing the reconditioning will help. You may have a bad module though, but Techstream would help with that code identification.

Search around here for ways to crack the code. I got Techstream a couple of years back, so I forget how I did it:rolleyes:.

With the state of your battery and the possibility of a failed module, I’d get Techstream up and running;).

Search around here, you’ll find it(y).

State of charge was grey, 2 or 3 shy of full. Seemed like where it should be. Thanks for the response. I'll see what I can do about techstream. My brain turns off when it comes to computers.
