How many miles do you get on the first pip?

I normally get around 100 to 150, but it seems like the rest of the "pips" decrease much faster

 

75-120 seems to be the range for me.

 

The same as the others have reported. If I fill up and drive the car on level roads at 45 to 55 MPH I can go 150 before guage changes. In cold weather and short trips I have seen it disappear after 30 or 40 miles. It all depends how full you can get the tank, which seems to be something we will nvre really know!

 

Eight tanks so far, and you can see the variation. The numbers represent after how many miles each pip dropped. Tank seven is weird because the MFD says I used 2 gals more than I pumped into it, and when I fueled up, I was only able to add 3.5 gals that got me to half a tank, then drove to another pump for another 8.5 gals. Very weird.

I just gas up at one pip, no matter how far I've driven. I don't wait for the warning light.

I got 130 miles on my "most recent" first pip; it doesn't mean much, so I rarely pay attention to it.

Mine usually goes between 150 and 180 with the record being 202. Then down down down they go.

 

I was just thinking about this yesterday. My previous record was 220miles. This tank I got 230miles. I should have taken a photo. The MFD was showing 61mpg until I took an out of town trip this weekend with my family. Now it's down to 57mpg.

Not much different than any other. The guage is basically a crap shoot. When two blips show I'm thinking fill-up.

I respectfully disagree. I believe that the gas tank gauge is quite accurate, if you understand what you're reading. It doesn't read the volume of gas you've used, but rather the volume of gas remaining. On tanks where I've put in around 10.5 - 11 gallons, I've actually gone as high as 350 miles before the first pip disappears. On average tanks, where I put in 8.5-9 gallons, it typically disappears at 140-170 miles. The point is that the uppermost pip measures the top of the tank where the most apparent flex in the bladder takes place. I feel like every other pip on the gauge reads consistently the same, tank to tank within reason. Its the first that is the difference. I can tell you within maybe 10-20 miles how far I will go on a tank based entirely on when that first pip drops off.

In short, I think a lot of folks badmouth the gauge, and in some ways, they're right to do so because the pips appear to vanish at almost unpredictable intervals... unless you've looked at the correlation between the volume of gas initially in the tank and the timing of that first pip.

 

I was able to show all my friends that my fuel gauge was still showing full even after 200 miles. Then, it just started to drop faster and faster. I achieve 525 on my first tank.

 

I filled up last Saturday, the first pip dropped off today at 129 miles, so it seems I'm right in the pack with everyone else.

I disagree with your disagreement. What you're saying is that the top 1/3 of the tank is unmeasured by the gauge. I agree. Then you say the remaining pips have a corrolation the the original volume and the timing of the first pip. I disagree.

After the first pip disappears the remaining 9 seem to go with no relationship to one another. 9th 20 miles or so, 8th 25, 7th 20 again, 6th 25, 5th 40, 4th 35, 3rd 75-80, 2nd 50-60, Last, who knows? With this guage I'm not going there.

I've been keeping up with this over 5 tanks or so. I realize terrain has a lot to do with it but I do not live in a hilly area and the results have settled in now and don't show variation beyond 5 miles or so.

 

On my first long highway run, Sunday night, I-10 from Pensacola to New Orleans, very flat (except for a few gentle grades), I went 195 miles before Pip-1 went away. About seven miles later, I had reached my destination, and topped off again. Just over 4.5 gal were gone, or more than 1/3 of the tank. The gauge did NOT do a very good job of measuring fuel remaining (or used for that matter), at least for that first third. Not really critical, since you're not running out of gas at this phase of a given fill, but annoying nonetheless, at least to me. We'll see how it does when I let the gas go lower. I don't need the psychological effect of a gauge that hangs at full for a long time, and then makes a mad plunge to empty. I want a true reading of gas remaining, from the top to the bottom. A few months back, my mother-in-law gave my 17 year old son her old car (a time warp, garage car, an 87 Cadillac Seville, with only 57k miles on it, yes owned by her since new). It's instrument panel is all green VF digital, and the gas is shown numerically in gallons remaining. And from a 19 year old GM car -- dead on accuracy from full to the dregs. Toyota can, and should, do better.

 

Ok mine is way off then (then again I only have 700 miles on her) but I only got 97 miles on my first pip. According the display I'm averaging 46.8 mpg but in doing the math it's more like 44.2, which is fine.

On each of my fill ups (one at 2 pips and one at 1 pip) I was only able to put in 8.2 and 8.8 gallons respectively. I was surprised that at 1 pip I couldn't even get 9 gallons in the bladder.

 

We got 193 miles a couple of tanks ago. I don't pay much attention to the pips so I have no idea what we've had for other tanks.

In my 05 I have gotten anywhere from 70 to 185 miles on my first bar; most often I get around 150 (give or take 15 miles).
