I just cleaned the throttle body and MAF for first time on my 2008 Prius with 145K miles. Original owner. Used an old towel soaked in cleaner around a screwdriver and used that to clean the inside of the TB by rotating the butterfly. Followed a DIY vid on You Tube. Got some grime but not as much as I would have expected. Have changed the air filter pretty regularly so maybe that helped.

Also removed and cleaned the MAF sensor by spraying the sensor with the MAF cleaner. Made sure not to touch it.

Reassembled and made sure the MAF sensor was re-attached with a click. Also was conscious to make sure good air seals in hoses.

Now, car starts fine, but stalls and dies after 30-60 seconds. Never had that happen before. I must have messed this up somehow.

Any ideas what might have happened? Should probably say that engine was idling and running fine until I did this cleaning. Grateful for any wise help.

I was going to say you forgot to plug in the maf connector but you say you plugged it in.
Only thing else is the 10 mm throat clamp under the air cleaner assy. It clamps the air cleaner housing to the TB. If not sealed a lot of unmetered air will sneak by.
If the engine won’t run it should throw a check engine light that will tell you why it’s unhappy.
You may have disconnected the drive by wire butterfly control motor connector.
That will def throw a code.

It’s pretty simple. In and out coolant loop a hose from the pcv valve below the butterfly that needs to be hosed out with carb cleaner btw and a connector for the drive by wire throttle motor.

Hope you have a code reader.

You should reset the car by disconnecting the 12v negative for about a minute. Then your idling will be back to normal

Never had to do that and have cleaned the throttle body twice. Cleaned it good.
What are you doing that the car is aware of you need to do that?

After 30 - 60 seconds, the prius would shut off if the car is warmed up. Hybrid remember

After cleaning the MAF sensor the car will idle kinda strange, not very smooth. Resetting the 12v fixes this problem

Ed, JC9, really grateful to both you two for trying to help. Ed, I wondered about the 10 mm clamp band underneath the air filter assembly. Hard to see if good connection so I took it apart and had already redone. I think it's a good seal. I tried starting the engine without the MAF sensor connected. Wouldn't start and got me a Check Engine light. That has gone away after reconnecting the MAF and starting the engine a couple times. I currently have no warning lights nor Check Engine Light.

JC, was hoping that disconnecting the 12 V battery would fix the problem. Disconnected for a few minutes, reconnected, but unfortunately got same failure signature.

    1. Car starts easily and seems to run smoothly. After 30-35 seconds (stop watch timing it now), stalls very quickly.
    2. Waited about 5-10 seconds and restarted. Engine stalled almost immediately.

Same as before the battery reset.

If I'm not getting a Check Engine light, is it safe to say that i haven't inadvertently de-mated another connector?

Could I have somehow damaged the MAF by spraying it with MAF cleaner?

Any other ideas? Will try disassembling and reassembling while my on-line consultants are thinking ;-) Thanks all.

Now with a few photos of the throttle body after the air filter assembly is removed and of the MAF out of the air filter assembly. Anyone seel anything amiss? Sounds to me like the throttle body plate is sticking. What did you use to clean it?

Throttle body cleaner has a little lubricant so the plate will not stick when it open and closes. You can try to rub a little wd40 on the throttle body and see if it'll help it

When you disconnect the MAF you get CEL. Reconnect and CEL goes away. So seems like the car "sees" the MAF, is ok with it.

You're sure it's not this, not just shutting due to being warmed up, but still in ready mode?

Throttle body cleaner sprayed on a rag wrapped around a toothbrush. Sometimes the soft toothbrush with the throttle body cleaner. If the butterfly plate is sticking, wouldn't I be able to notice it when I poke my finger down the throat? Seems like it opens and springs closed as before. Thanks!

I hope you are watching your traction battery state of charge carefully while working through this.

The engine may not be producing power long enough on each start to replenish the amount of charge used to crank it. If the charge falls below 20% or so, you could get into a difficult spot.

And there's fuel in the car?

About a 1/2 tank. Put it all back together paying extra attention to tight air seals and seems to be running fine now. I'm thinking I had an air leak somewhere that I corrected by disassembling and reassembling....and the roughness at first with pulsating idle was some kind of readjustment to a cleaner TB and MAF sensor. Really grateful to everyone to help me troubleshoot. All for now....unless I get stranded somewhere....many thanks!

Yeah I was thinking, something overlooked or not quite right, in the process of reinstalling the air intake.

Sometimes if you have aot of cleaner that got into the intake it will run rough for a while until it burns it off. It looks nice and clean though. Don't forget to spray some lubricant on the outside butterfly axle spring. And don't forget the hood latch and the front driver door mechanical keyhole. Put the key in that hole and move it around after you spray some lube in it. It never gets used till the 12v goes dead and then you can’t get into the car without that key find its rusted shut. Don't use WD40 thats the worst. I use CSP from Home depot. No smell and it stays where you spray it.

Still running strong after a couple days to / from work. Seems my mileage is significantly up after cleaning the throttle body and MAF sensor which was the original objective. First time to clean in the 10 year / 145K history. Mileage is back closer to where it was when my Prius was newer. ed, thanks for the tip on lubing the butterfly axle spring, hood latch. What do you recommend for the butterfly and hood latch? I always use graphite powder on locks. I assume that's OK for driver door lock. Good thought to lube as have smart key so very rarely use back up key out of fob. Thanks again to all.

Thinking back at your original post, where you said you drenched a rag with cleaning fluid and cleaned the throttle body, that extra fluid is probably what made your car stall. After all the fluid burned away, your car went back to normal. Next time you clean it, just spray a small amount onto a rag and wipe the throttle body.

I sprayed my 2008 one time and thought I messed it up too. I was able to keep it running though. Eventually it settled down and idled like it should. I don't remember checking gas mileage.

The rag was wet but soaked up the fluid, evaporated quickly, so not close to dripping down throttle. FWIW.
