Whistling sound comes from engine

    Hello everybody, I starter to hear a whistling sound coming from the engine in my Prius 2012 with about 150000km, it sounds to be electrical then a mechanical sound, it very annoying that hurt the ears. I tryed something, While I’m driving I switched to (N) Neutral and this sound gone, when I switched back to D (Drive) the sound back. Someone told me that the inverter is the responsable of this sound! Anyone can help me to solve this probleme via the sound is very annoying.

    Howdy Prince. Is it possible to record the sound with your cell phone? I'm very curious. Although I'm sure someone will have an answer for you from experience.

    Im at home now, I will tomorow, but it is like an electrical whistling , it’s very annoying and it cuts the ears. hope is not the inverter

    I’ve got an idea and I would share it with you. I’ve baught my car used with about 115.000km, and I never changed the inverter coolant, I was reading about that and I found that I should replace the coolant every 120.000 150.000 km, and mine is about 150.000. Can this cause a wrong function of the inverter and make this sound?

    Don’t know bro, hope is just the pump and not the hole inverter

    mine whistles in the cold weather, i suppose that isn't an issue in morocco?

    i think mine has whistled at 8, but i might have a problem i don't know about. my 2012 has 90,000 km.

    Hey guys , I found a video in YouTube, it explains why inverters make such sounds, not the Prius inverter but the sound I hear from my car is same .

    sounds normal to me, they aren't all the same for some reason, our hycam whines louder than our prius.

    OP states the whistle stops when switching to neutral. Not sure about this, but wouldn't the inverter continue to emit the sound as long as the vehicle is made READY? If so, something in the PSD then?

    Depends on how loud it is. I have a mid fresh cycle 2012 and it does make a whistling sound when lightly press and hold accelerator down while car is EV and not in EV driving mode. When I lift my feet off the accelerator, sound goes away. I can hear the sound but it doesn't annoy me, the sound is magnifited when you drive on narrow road with sidewalks. You can hear it very well also in a pa/rking ga/rage like the airport or downtwon. It doesn't annoy me because I grew up with old computer with fans running at highest RPM. Computer nerds now and days complain about that haha, "the fans a/re soo loud" no shit your computer temp remains cool. Now I'm just venting r/andom thoughts.

    Yes the sound stops when switching to N and it starts when I accelerate more then 50km/h, But the sound is more electrical then mechanical that why I don’t think is the PSD but I’m not sure about. I recently changed the transmission fluid.
