Can anyone recommend a cheaper alternative for getting a replacement key than at the local Toyota dealership? I am in Los Angeles, CA. I know there is programming involved, so I am wondering if I have to go through the dealership. Thanks.

What type of car and what type of key. Your profile lists "other non-hybrid".

You need to purchase a new fob from the dealer and have the dealer program the car to accept the new SKS fob.

This is exactly correct. You don't have to purchase the fob from the dealer, but it needs to be new and the dealer has to program the car to accept it.

Some dealers can reseed the ECU to allow a used fob to work, but this is a time consuming process. The dealer fees will likely cancel any savings from buying a used fob.

Call around. Some dealers charge less than others.

You can almost always get a better deal from a mobile automotive locksmith. I am in Florida and I know the prices are much lower from a locksmith than the dealer. I don't know anyone in CA, but you should be able to look one up there. Make sure they are really a local company, though. There are a lot of call center brokers who look online like local businesses but are not, and they could scam you.
