I finally got around to purchasing a fob replacement shell for my 2nd SKS key (for my 2nd Gen, 2006).

Pulled the old one apart, pulled the board, pulled the RFID (that's the odd shaped thingy at top of the key, right?) installed both in the new FOB - all good so far.

Pressing the open/lock keys causes the little red light on the FOB to light up but does not open the car doors. Standing next to the car does not unlock the doors. Sitting in car with key in pocket does not allow me to start the car. Placing the FOB in the slot DOES allow me to start the car.

I assume this means the RFID is fine but the board is damaged. I've cleaned the board but still, doesn't work. Is there anything in particular I can look for that might be causing the problem or should I just say this key is only going to work when placed in the dashboard slot and call it a day?

You did get the FOB programmed to actually work on your car right????

Both fobs came with the car and both fobs worked. Programming shouldn't be necessary, I don't think.

The rubber on the second fob, the area covering the buttons, had worn off. At that point I stopped using the fob and started using the second. That was probably two years ago, and this fob sat in a drawer that entire time. I finally just got around to buying a new shell, intending to have two functioning fobs again. (I did not test this fob before placing it in the new shell.)

OK, did you pull the battery from from the FOB before you did the transplant??

Yes. As noted above, the battery is working because when I press a button (lock or unlock) the red light on the fob shines.

where did you get the idea to do the RFID module transplant, do you have a link where I can see what inspired you to this???

I'm not sure if it is actually an/the RFID, like I said above. It is the gray thingy, but I got the idea to do it from this video:

OK Jeremy, after spending a little time watching the videos, I have to think that your board is NG, or the battery you used might be too weak to transmit properly. If #2, NEW BATTERY. All you did was a simple case transplant. Pulling the RFID chip and inserting it into the new case is OK. You stated the old fob was at one time working, was it put in the drawer working? If you press the individual buttons do you get a tiny click, and get the led indicator turning ON/OFF with each press? I have seen switches latch themselves into a depressed state and stay there. If you can press all three, and led does DO on/off this is probably not the problem. If possible pull the circuit board and get a magnifier an see if the circuit board is cracked, if so that's a problem. If the board is cracked, it is possible to repair the crack, superglue, a tiny bit will suffice, then you will have to bridge the broken trace, traces. You will need a low power soldering pencil with a fine tip. If you have no soldering skills, don't even attempt. You may just have to accept the FOB is NFG!! Good luck !!

Jeremy, sorry to hear that! I kind of have exhausted all the simple fixes I could offer. Hopefully you can find a new FOB at a reasonable price, and be OK. At least you will not need to cut a new key! Good luck, but you are going to have to spend some money, hopefully as little as possible!!
