In UK we used to have Orange Wednesday, where the mobile phone service provider, Orange, gave free tickets to a local cinema each week. Orange was taken over by Everything Everywhere (EE) and the service was withdrawn although not concurrently. EE is now bonded with T-Mobile and BT Mobile and provides the biggest UK coverage area with its cell masts. I'm with EE but my Hwawei P9 is still jealous of Pgrl,'s Note!

Moviepass has made it difficult for some of its subscribers to use their Google Play app. As of last Friday, most of those with Android 4 Kitkat cannot login to the app. I upgraded the OS on one of my smartphones to Android 7.1 Nougat yesterday so I am able to login again and use it.

It would be nice if Android 4 functions again with Moviepass but I'm not counting on it but am glad that I can use the service with at least one of my phones for now. I have three Freedompop phones LOL.

If you have one device you have not updated, look for an app that you can use to transfer the old .apk from that device to the ones that were updated using Bluetooth.

That saved me when I updated the PriusChat app on one of my devices.

I always turn the Play Store auto-update off.

Not sure what you're explaining is applicable to my situation with Moviepass. The Moviepass app was last upgraded on 8 Jan 2018. I'm not sure why the Moviepass app isn't playing nice with Kitkat. Just weird. I have not had an eariler version of the app since I joined only last month and did not upgrade the app that I can recall.

Nevertheless, I was not aware that files could be transferred via Bluetooth. I have two phones with the stock rom that cannot be upgraded beyond Kitkat. I have been running a custom rom on the third phone for awhile that I upgraded from Cyanogenmod 11 to Lineage OS 14.1 with TWRP recovery.

    Just trying to help.

I do tech support for an Android device manufacturer. We don't build any phones for FreedomPop, though.

It sounds like something has been updated somewhere.

Perhaps it's Google Play Services or Google Play Framework. Something apparently has happened to some variable in the KitKat environment that is causing the app to fail.

Perhaps you should try wiping the cache partition.

Failing that, I recommend you contact the app's developer for further assistance.

Okay. Thanks for trying to explain what it could be.

I have an old HP Touchpad tablet with Cyanogenmod 11 and because it's Kitkat, the Moviepass app wouldn't run on it either after Friday.

Saw 'The Greatest Showman' this evening. 5% fact, 95% fantasy. Fast paced and fun. Pleasantly surprised. Worth a watch if you can tolerate musicals. Nothing like a good movie to escape reality for a couple of hours.

I will miss Moviepass after it's gone. I've been going to the movies (off and on) for 50 years. It's sad that megaplexes will be disappearing soon from the landscape just as gigantic indoor malls have been.

I don't know who was the first to say it but it's so true - 'change is the only constant'.

Update: we’ve seen 17 movies in less than a month and have “spent” $204 each. The monthly cost from Costco though is $7.50 so our effective savings is 2726%. Pretty good!

Close, 89.99. I divided that by 12 to get the monthly cost.

Saw Peter rabbit just now. Cute movie. Ticket price would’ve been 13.90 though. Ouch.

Anyone using the new app (version 3.02A)? I immediately noticed that not all showtimes are available on the new app but are still shown on the previous version of the app. I live in SE Michigan and almost exclusively frequent the MJR theatre chain.

BTW - I saw Black Panther on Friday. Pretty good.

First month of MoviePass is over. Here are my short reviews for all 21 movies we watched:

The Post - A little boring. Story’s about one person who really wants to publish, but his boss says it’s not the right time. Wow almost sounds like my life as a PhD student.

Coco - Good movie but I hate how Pixar always tries so hard to make people cry. It gets me as angry as sad.

Jumanji - No complaints. Solid fun.

Molly’s Game - Interesting enough true story that made us wiki it when we got home. Well-told.

3 Billboards Outside Missouri - A little slow but with some very intense scenes. Not a huge fan of the ending but hey, it was different.

Phantom Thread - one of the worst movies I’ve ever had to sit through. Painfully slow. “Well acted?” I couldn’t tell because I was getting so sleepy. This is the kind of movie that makes you hate the Academy Awards. Well, besides Moonlight.

Pitch Perfect 3 - Entertaining and funny. It was “Moviepass Good,” meaning I enjoyed it but probably wouldn’t pay real money for it. 80% of the movies I see are MoviePass Good. At the time I saw it I needed a break from the boring Oscar movies though.

12 Strong - Typical war movie. Also MoviePass Good.

Forever My Girl - Ok this was actually surprisingly enjoyable. Nicholas Sparks-esque and the wife was happy.

Shape of Water - Intense and entertaining. Still not sure it’s Best Picture worthy but at least it didn’t put me to sleep.

Lady Bird - Good movie, but I could see how this could be boring to some. It was basically just a coming of age story. Like the others, I'm not sure what makes this so good for Best Picture. I did enjoy the jabs towards Sacramento and UC Davis though, because they were all true lol.

I Tonya - Good but not great. Felt kind of like Molly’s game; female lead, true story, and I had to wiki it when I got home. Looking forward to I Kerrigan.

Ferdinand - Funny and cute. Not as deep as Coco.

Til The End of the World - A Chinese movie about a guy and a girl stranded in Antarctica. Intense, dramatic, and enjoyable.

Hostiles - my favorite movie so far. It’s heavy, it’s intense, and it’s the movie Bale was born for. That along with all his other movies.

Paddington 2 - Disappointing given its 100% on rotten tomatoes. Predictable and I’ve seen cuter.

Den of Thieves - Entertaining with interesting twist at the end. MoviePass Good.

Peter Rabbit - cute, entertaining, and short. Liked it much more than Paddington. MoviePass Good.

Samson - Surprisingly enjoyable. Wife likes that it makes me want to work out hard at the gym. Wife dislikes that it makes me want to grow out my hair.

Early Man - A little disappointing. Pretty predictable and there were never any real LOL moments for me. Actually was more of a sports movie than anything. Chicken Run was way better. I mean how can you ever match the line “Chickens...are not...ORGANIZED!!!”

Black Panther - entertaining but another Rotten Tomatoes letdown. So the Black Panther's built a wall, wants to keep out the refugees/illegal immigrants, and doesn’t want to share his resources with the rest of the world? Sounds more like Black Trump. Hah.

Isle of Dogs - Ok so this isn’t actually out yet but I’ve had to sit through the trailer at least 19 times. At 3 min long I’ve seen about 60 minutes worth of this movie. That’s gotta count for something right?

There was nothing wrong with the new app. After a friend showed me how to use it that is.
