I think the lady had made her point politely and succinctly. It could be seen as argumentative to pursue this beyond her acceptable wishes and a gentleman will recognise that without more ado.

    OMG , my grammar has time-warped a bit there.:censored:

I apologize for some of the views here. Although we moved to a more rural 6 acre property a couple of years ago, I cannot totally relate to your situation, but I admire your views and lifestyle.

I do recommend you get some sort of UPS to protect your computer. Whether or not you need power conditioning depends on whether you experience frequent electrical brownouts (low voltage situations).

I have lived in a city of a couple of million people and it can be difficult for people who have always lived in that situation to relate you your life. IMHO people need to be more accepting of different value choices.

W10 hides things, if you can get the "run" dialog type "msconfig", if not search for "msconfig", when you get maconfig open go to the Startup page, uncheck everything, nothing neds to start at startup, w10 started, when you want a program, open it, then close it, your computer is wasting time, and memory opening unnecessary programs, which brings up memory, if you can, add more, the processor is the traffic cop, it tells memory what programs to run and when, memory is what is working, and with w10, more is merrier, programs run in memory, the hard drive is where memory stores the program and changes to the program, Defrag the hard drive, defraging puts all the data a program uss in one place instead of spread out on the harddrive accrding to the times the program was used, yes to a new computer power supply if it's older, they are cheap, look on google, t's easy to switch them, have compressed air and blow out everything, but, w10 opens slowly, so relax.

Our old HP desktop PC with AMD processor originally came with Windows 7 as well. It ran ok on Windows 10 until the Creator's edition uodate.

To the OP, after an update, you can always force the computer to go back to the pre-updated operating system. The computer always creates a restore point before the update is installed.

I have done this three times, each time the Creators update has automatically installed on the PC.

If you kept the PC in standby or sleep mode, our HP with an AMD quad core processor was having trouble coming out of sleep mode lately. Instead of waking up to the sign-in screen, it would reboot, or freeze, requiring a hard reset.

We have resorted to shutting down the PC after using it rather than putting it into sleep/standby.

A bit reluctant to bring this thread back from the dead, but if it helps someone.

My Christmas gift laptop just started having a bunch of the same problems as the OP, but none of the other factors were in the laptops past -ie- the laptop never experienced power spikes, power outages.

In my case, it seems it might have been AVAST -- the free version of a popular AV program. Can't prove it, of course, but was having the same issues and this is a new machine. I ended up uninstalling AVAST and now, all problems are gone. Does not PROVE it was AVAST, but just wanted to relate this in the event it aids someone.

Oh, the idea to deep-six AVAST was not my own. I did some really heavy research and was finding more than a few folks that were having trouble with AVAST after one or more of the recent Windows updates. And, many of those tales mimicked mine and the OP's.

I've used Avast on my MacBook Pro ever since I bought it - No issues whatsoever. Of course, YMMV...

Countless folks use AVAST and have no problems. I was one of them -- I think, still no REAL PROOF -- until just recently.

I THINK AVAST caused my issues. But, maybe not. It could have been seagulls flying over the house that caused my problem.

The thing is, with so many people with so many configurations, I would have to think that some do not work.

Perhaps some will disagree, but with everything we use computers and cells for now, I do not consider the use of free and/or open source security a wise choice. YMMV.

Many people find open source security a plus. Too many times the closed source alternatives have been found lacking. At least with the open source ones, the security can be verified as much as possible.

Actually, you cannot verify something is secure. You can only verify something is insecure.

Linux vs Windows...straight up consumer based with no additional security...true.
Free, open source or provider supplied to secure anything using any system...not happening.

    Just my friendly. ;)

As much as I hate to open up this thread again....for several reasons...the primary one being that as soon as I post this, my 'puter will probably crash.

But....Got the box back. Total cost $110 minus a 10 percent discount "just because."

It has been working fine for more than a week. No freezes, no slow reboots. I did uninstall Avast, which, yes, is (was) my AV solution. Maybe that was the cause of all evil. I don't know.

Also using an APC power unit. Monitor is ALSO plugged into it.

At the moment I am relying on Windows Defender for AV. Probably have to address that at some point, but for the moment, it works.

So, considering the desktop was acting up nearly every time I used it, it now seems, if not fixed, at least "better."

I realize my way of doing things is probably unconventional compared to a lot of people. It was the way I was raised and I think almost anyone can relate to that.

My dad was a BIG part of my life. I would like to say he treated me like the son he never had, but he DID have sons and I was just thrown in the mix, which I think was the healthiest way to go about raising kids. My mom was raised with three brothers, so she is not exactly a girly-type either. Anyway, with us it was not boy/girl. It was just kids. Here we were and this was how it was. Hmmm, I am straying from topic AGAIN> BAD< BAD KRIS

Anyway -- thanks to all of you for putting up with my off-topic rants, but back to point, computer seems to have recovered -- maybe...

A VPN is recommended whenever using public WiFi or internet access. I find Cyberghost to be very useful, even the free version. With limited free bandwidth per month, TunnelBear is another good one.

Exactly so! There is nothing like peer review for verification. (y)

    Thanks for the update.
APC is our brand choice for UPS too. We tried other brands and had issues.

Mehn, that happened to me years back.

My laptop dell inspiron, suddenly just died down. It had installed in it, my alldata software, and some important files. I nearly cried the day I lost those files.

Now, I got a HP beats laptop with 2T memory. Have bought an external hard drive, just in case.

Sorry for the gradual demise of our old desktop/laptop.

Computers invariably come with spare hard drive bays. With an extra drive installed, you can routinely/quickly mirror whatever needs saving, from the system drive to the back up. Windows has a very handy built-in command line utility called robocopy, that can be easily incorporated into a batch file:

    @echo off
    robocopy c:\backups d:\backups /mir /xo

Deinstalling adaware and going to windows defender is working for me at this point as well. Between that and the new video card I haven’t had any more crashing either. I think you made the right call. For the record I have an APC UPS as well.
