CBC radio is great. A little repetitious, but no ads, really a station with heart. I think you could stream it.

More in reference to platforms such as Facebook, Google, etc. Yes, I paid for my car and DO NOT WANT the nav screen showing me ads. Sorry for the confusion...

The 'acknowledgements' have greatly expanded over the generations, to the point I must now call many of them 'advertisements'.

    'verdant'?

Only time I get blasted with ads and don't care for it is at the gas station. The pumps have giant screens on them that speak to you loudly about nothing I care about. You used to be able to press one of the buttons around it to mute, but that doesn't work anymore. I've switched gas stations because of this a few times. And it makes me miss plugging my Leaf in versus getting yelled at by a little man in a screen for 5 minutes.

Been radio ad free since 2003 when I switched to Sirius then in 2008 the BBC started streaming its radio and that now streams via my cell over bluetooth to all vehicles. Even when I am up in the air, which is often, I use my free aircraft WiFi to stream BBCR1 and listen to that.

I hate ads. I feel for the movie theatres though. They make most of their money on concessions and would close up if you stopped buying their popcorn. For example Disney has been forcing theatres to give them upwards of 64% of ticket revenue, guarantee some of its releases are shown on the biggest screen(s) in the entire cinema and locked in for a 4 week period. It is really hard for independent style cinemas to tie up an entire screen room for 4 weeks for a single film and give 64% of the ticket money to Disney. And if you accidentally put out that promotional poster a few hours early, you get slapped with 5%, 10%, or higher penalties. I think on the last Star Wars cut some theatres after penalties were paying over 80% of their ticket revenue to Disney.

We do love going to movies even though its expensive. With the club thing Cinemark theatres have started it's $8.99 a ticket (doesn't matter if it's a normal ticket or a Weekend IMAX which is normally twice the price). We get the reusable popcorn buckets every January for $12 and then we fill them up for $3. And of course the coupons like "free drink with any size popcorn purchase" work with the buckets. And to top it off, there are 2 ChargePoint chargers outside the theatre right upfront so the Leaf is fully charged and warmed up when the movie ends. It's pretty perfect.

sounds like someone hear has never subscribed to cable TV.

There are always hacks for stuff like that. The phone I'm writing this on has a custom OS that can load "unapproved" apps that kill ads. Tapatalk has tried to bombard me /w over 10,300 ads - & I've never had to endure a single one.

Well, not never, but for at least 25 years now... And probably never will in the future.

Thanks for the Android hack pointer. I really can't get rid of ads on that platform, try as I might. Maybe this thing will work for me.

I made that exact antenna, only on a much smaller scale! Never seen those plans though, just YouTubed on how to build my own. That thing works fantastic! (Cable cutter for 6+ years now) seriously - who even needs cable these days.

Pluto TV - Free 50+ channels - Includes major news channels & Fox sports (if your a sports fan)
Crackle - (Netflix clone owned by Sony Entertainment) Also Free
TubiTV - (Netflix clone that specializes in obscure movies & TV shows from the 50's through the present.) - Also Free
YouTube - what isn't on YouTube?
    Vidillion TV

There are several more, but these are about all I watch.

But I am so with all of you on the Ads. Absolutely annoying. Was at my parents house last weekend watching something on DirectTV with the rest of the family. We counted 14 commercials - all back to back, and then we just gave up and switched to something else.

But it's never been anywhere near as bad as the commercial stuff.

Clear Channel became so hated they changed their name to IHeart Radio. No matter what you call them, they still can't get the stink off.

If you shrink it, it will work only in strong signal areas where tuning is not important. Or maybe just a portion of the desired band, i.e. well on some frequencies, poorly on others.

For efficient reception of weak signals, the correct dimensions are important. They are determined by the wavelengths one intends to receive.

My latest, not a lot better than a single version, but I had fun making it.

I would have thought it was meant to be mounted outside, preferably on a mast.

It looks similar to our purchased UHF antenna. We bought it when almost all our local stations moved to UHF when they went digital. The one exception is our PBS station so we also have a VHF Low antenna.

Apparently, when digital frequencies were first allocated, the PBS stations were first. Some clueless individual decided to start assigning with the lowest numbers, which turn out to have the poorest coverage.

Well it's on the second floor. :p I don't think I'd pull in any more on an outside mast, maybe another 10 feet higher, and it's a lot more hassle. I do have an amplifying splitter. There's one channel that's borderline, might help with it, but it's mostly garbage. Come to think of it, they're all mostly garbage. But I had fun, lol.

Changing the direction it's aimed might help. Must easier to aim on a mast than moving a wall, though. :cautious:

Choose the right colored wires and it could be art.

It just happens to be point right at the source (mount Seymour), so can't improve on that. Just opportune. The screen behind it helps, ticks the signal up 5~10 whatever's. Our older, family room tv shows strength numbers, 0~100 IIRC. Newer tv in living room, just rudimentary bar graph, with maybe 4~5 blips.

I see they painted it. It would be interesting to see a night photo if they also lighted it.

I worked for one UHF TV station where they only put the antenna on a 90 ft tower so they did not need to paint & light it. There was part of the mountain in the way between the antenna and one of the communities they were expected to serve. We ended up using a high gain UHF antenna so the local cable TV provider there could get a good signal.
