Hybrid Battery Pricing

    So I've had some bad luck...have a 2005 Prius with about 109K on it. The hybrid battery died about 6 months ago so I paid to have it replaced because I figured the car would still last me a while. Then about a month ago the engine died - apparently the pistons were leaking oil into the engine and I'm not investing in a new one of those. So I have a Prius with a body and interior in pretty good shape, but a pretty close to brand new hybrid battery system in it. Haven't put it on the market yet but hoping to sell it to someone who rebuilds engines or a Prius mechanic who might want it for the battery. Does anyone have ideas on how much people are willing to pay in this type of situation? I know what I paid for the new battery installation but wanted to get a ballpark on what I might ask for the car. Thanks!

    Is it a new OEM battery from a dealer or something else (refurb, 3rd party "new", etc.)?

    I have not. It seemed like that would be quite the endeavor to find that and get both cars to the same place with someone capable of making the switch (since I am not capable of doing it myself).

    Considering that the HV pack is now more valuable than the rest of the car, sell your relatively new HV pack outright to someone and then sell the rest of the car to a mechanic who is willing to do the work to make it saleable. You will probably recover more of your original investment out of it that way. If it were me, I would buy another low mileage engine and have it installed.

    So help me understand. The car has only a 100k miles and you have a new dealer installed HV battery. Who made your engine failure diagnosis? A little oil leaking past some piston rings is no big deal. It takes more than that to cause an engine to just fail. Certainly there's a few more details available? Any type of diagnosis paperwork? Wouldn't it be worth it to actually determine why the engine "died"?
