Changed oil and filter. Found this

    So my new to me, 2010 Prius with 209k got an oil change today. It looks like the old filter collapsed. Funny thing is the selling dealer only put it in 500 miles ago. Anyone ever see that before?

    What dealer would sell a 209k mile car?

    That actually looks normal for an oem filter. What doesn't look normal is how worn it looks with so few miles. I don't think it was changed by the dealer, probably just did a drain and fill to make the oil look fresher

    Maybe it's aftermarket, and slightly too tall, squished a bit when they torqued down the cap.

    Yeah that's one knackered looking oil filter, definitely not 500 mile fresh. Someone here had troubles removing the housing, let it go at least 20K, and it looked like that.

    Or maybe somebody torqued the filter cap to 100 foot-pounds (like they did mine)o_O

    This makes me really wonder how mine looks now...

    No, that oil filter housing bottoms out against a machined face, that's all she wrote.

    If you're still fighting that, I would cave, buy a replacement housing (which you may or may not need, but it doesn't hurt to have a spare in reserve), and then have at it.

    Maybe an electric impact wrench would help, coupled with a quality, heavy gauge socket.

    I've never had problems, with a 1/2" drive long handled ratchet (18"~) and a Honda socket (same size). But then again, the only other person to torque it was at the factory in Japan, 18 foot pounds I'm sure.

    Pretty sure mine look slightly wavy like that whenever I take them out. It wouldn't alarm me.

    The dealer is a Ford/Mazda dealer. They had it on the wholesale/pre-auction lot. The interior/exterior look to be in great shape. The housing cap had some damage that indicated someone had trouble taking it out in the past. I will replace that in 5k miles when I change the oil again.

    BTW, here is an exterior shot while I was changing the oil.

    That filter doesn’t look like it’s been changed for along time lol... my filter never looks that crush when removing it.

    Going off topic here, but you should pay careful attention to the oil level and coolant level on this car.

    The oil change before selling it to you is an alarming red flag for me. Hopefully it wasn't milky looking. I mean why bother if it's going to auction?

    Oil looked clean. Coolant is right on full, bright pink and very clean. It did have three bad coils when I bought it. It made the 45 minute trip from the dealer to my house at 26-28 mpg. Since the coils it’s showing (and verifies with math) 43.4 mpg.

    It has 75% tread Michelin Defender tires.

    Even if it does need an engine, there are multiple low mileage engines in my area for 700 or less. So I’ll just keep an eye on everything and post my progress here.

    Just curious how much you paid a dealer for a car that drives under 30mph?

    There are more reports of head gasket failures on these cars, so the engines are more in demand now. Most places want $1200+

    Paid 4400 plus tax in Owensboro, KY for the car. Working at a major parts store chain, I can get the parts to repair for just about the same amount as the used engine price.

    I’ve been turning wrenches on my own vehicles for the past 27 years. I am not afraid to get my hands dirty if that’s what it takes.

    Never seen that before, but heard of it before many times. They'll say almost anything to you to convince you to buy it. Almost all dealers that I shopped looked for a Prius said their sister owned one.

    Did a hydrocarbon test on the coolant, and a compression test. Hydro test was negative. Compression is 162 psi to 168 psi. Every thing says they were trying to pull a fast one, but the longer I drive it, the better it drives.

    I logged into Toyotaowners.com and found the previous owner put the tires on it like 28k miles ago.

    I’m very happy with my first Prius. I’ll post updates from time to time.
