Just recently bought a base 2012 Prius PIP. It's a great car so far, but the issue I'm having is that it sometimes charges and sometimes does not when I plug in. I know it works since I've charged it in the past (currently shows 21 miles for EV). The yellow light does not light up when I plug in, but I do hear the whirling sounds that I think some charging is happening. When I go to drive, it shows that the charging has stopped. Anyone have the same issue? I've google searched but found very few helpful results.

    congrats and welcome!
have you checked to make sure all the timed charging is off?

can you tell us about the history of the car?

Thanks! I never press the timed charger button. Doesn't look like its on. Does it reset every time I go on a drive?

It's a 2012 PIP base with roughly 90k miles. It was a private sale from a small family. What other info would be useful?

i guess accident or other detrimental history would help explain a problem. also, rodents can chew on wires creating electrical issues.

the charge timer is a schedule you have to set, change or delete manually. do you have the o/m?

another thought, are you sure the plug is inserted all the way? there is a gasket at the base of the receptacle that sometimes becomes dislodged, and prevents full insertion.

Just checked the timer light and it’s not on.

I looked for a gasket around the receptacle but it looks like just hard plastic. The white light on top of the charging does turn off when I insert the plug.

An indicated EV range of 21 is very suspicious, as is the charging indicator not lighting. I think the real question is what your actual range is when you drive easy and keep the ICE from starting.

The 21 miles is from 3 full charges in the past, it sometimes charges and sometimes does not. What would be the best way to check the actual range without ICE starting? Usually when I turn the car on, the ICE starts for a few seconds to charge the battery.

I will try that when I get home tonight.

The car is supposed to always start running in EV mode, without the ICE, and the traction battery by itself is supposed to top off your 12v battery. The regular charger does that too, and that can hide a bad 12v battery. I’m just guessing that your 12v battery may be 6 years old. If so, it’s time to replace it before you really get stuck somewhere. You might try topping it off with a regular charger to see if you can drive without the ICE, just don’t plug in the traction charger at the same time, it’s not recommended. Once you know your 12v is OK, you can try to determine if you have a problem in your charger or in the car itself. Borrowing a similar charger, say from a Leaf, would eliminate a bad charger from your picture. Of course you want to inspect your charger for obvious defects, like corrosion at any connection points or an obviously damaged cable. Good luck, and keep us posted on any developments.

if there are 0 miles on the ev battery indicator, the car will start in hv and fire the engine.

you can't check the actual range if the engine starts. you need ev miles beforehand.

Where did you go, @e5t? Did you figure out anything?

The only reasons I know of for your ICE to start when you first put it in READY mode are:
    • No EV range, as @bisco said.
    • Having the climate control set to auto with a temperature setting higher than ambient.
    • Pushing the EV/HV button to manually put it in HV mode.
If you saw 21 miles of EV range on a PiP, something really strange is going on. Given the other symptoms, I suspect the 12V battery has gone belly up. For one thing, if it's really low, it won't have enough power to initiate the HV battery charging sequence when you plug in the EVSE.

Sorry for not updating. I tried resetting the 12v battery, unplugged for about 30 min, no change.

We have level 2 chargers at work, however they don’t charge my car. I did however try a friends home level 2 charger, and it charged just fine. The car will stay in EV mode at idle with the EV battery charged.

I still need to try swapping the 12v battery, which I’ll try to do this week. Aside from that, am I missing anything else?

    That doesn't surprise me.

A low 12V would be my first guess, but I wouldn't buy one on a guess. I'd make sure that the 12V was actually bad before replacing it and I'd test it before I did anything else. It only takes a few seconds.

what do you mean by 'it will stay in ev mode at idle', you can't drive it in ev mode?
