Will EGR pipe inspection help me determine how bad EGR is?

I was up late last night reading your long OCC thread. I went to bed feeling overwhelmed and unsure of where to even start. Just seems like an engine shouldn't need this much babying. It should just ...work. Can I install and still let my shop do oil changes easily? Or will this interfere?

Everyone here is far more of a tinkerer than I am; I really respect you guys. I just don't have the energy to be putting all the time you guys do into my car. :)

Oil changes are independent of the occ;).

But check the cans contents frequently to ensure you don’t have other issues:eek:.

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

    Yup. @Prius Team ?

    crickets...

In my case, yes-and-no: Mounted on the lower cross beam, with a tap that drains to below, it's easiest to access with the engine underpanel off, during oil change. I did do an intermediate check roughly 3 months in, just to see what volume I was catching, having no previous experience. With 50 cc drained, and in winter with higher humidity, it looks like a 6 monthly interval (also my oil change interval) will work.

I just add pulling the occ dip stick to the weekend routine (also includes pulling oil dipstick on both cars and a 12 volt multimeter check;).

Does yours have a dipstick? With the light usage for yours, I’d expect some more to be caught:whistle:.

I think we need the nutzaboutboltz crew to do a water pump video! Or maybe Ray can start a new career. :D

I’ve been trying to work on @NutzAboutBolts for a bit to “randomly” meet somewhere .

A new career isn’t bad, but my current career pays the bills very well;).

It would be a good opportunity to add to their collection and our knowledge :).

I’m open to others participating and sharing (y).

Lol our schedule is pretty busy. I will see if we can find time to do a water pump video on the Prius. My partner lives in San Jose and I live here in Dublin. Too bad youtube doesn’t pay the bills for us or else we’d jump on it. We’re just doing this for fun. :)

Now I’m intrigued! Tell us more!
Have they done an OCC install yet?

I wish I lived near you all in CA.... there seems to be a lack of forum members up near me, even though we have a large population of Pri drivers.

I’d feel a lot more comfortable finding someone local to assist me with the EGR meet up! (y)

No dipstick, and I have to remove airbox and intake snorkel to get at it from above. OTOH, the engine bay looks very stock: looking from above you can't see anything.

OCC and water pump in the near future. We need to tackle this 01 civic timing belt in 4 weeks :( then debate on what’s next.

I’m a chemical engineer that does production management for about 50 direct and indirect reports;).

While you may think there are a lot of Prii near you, you should come out here where there are tens of thousands of them:).

So if you proportion out the number to member ratio, it’s probably similar ;).

While the job can be done solo, it is nice to have moral support or a second set of eyes sometimes :).

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

I have to remove the same stuff and I’ve gotten that down to a 2 minute activity ;).

I agree on not being able to see it, but also you’re not back pressuring the PCV valve, which I think is a good idea:).

That's the exact reason why I tell people not to buy any Prius, and Toyotas anymore. Their line of cars are becoming cr/ap every yea/r and they don't care about their customers. Unless deaths a/re involved, they will brush it aside.

Yes I still own a Toyota but this is the last one. This toyota won't get to see the junk ya/rd because it will be showered in diesel and be set on fire for closure, and be uploaded to youtube.

How often do you dump in complete fuel system clea/ners in the tank? And what's your br/and of gasoline to fill up with? Super ca/rious here.

Thought people who drove more on the HV battery than gas miles had the leeway because less gasoline to burn/process. If so, I'll have to commute the other way with involves more 55mph. This just changed my commute entirely.

I don't understand that bit, could you enlarge on that, more layman's terms.

It's all about the soot production. I'd have to dig up the article that showed exponential increases in soot with increases in RPM. This means if you double RPMs you at least quadruple soot. So picking a route with the least amount of stop and go will be the best. Steady state low RPM and a warm engine produces the least soot.

Because your OCC is lower than the PCV valve there's drainage of the oil out of the hose. This is better than having standing liquid in your hose that builds pressure against the PCV.
